Evidence of very old A1000 HHD mod

Ok, so my very tattered old A1000 arrived today.

Seems that it had a HDD installed in the past and going from the rusty switch, etc, it was installed quite some time ago.

Hmm, I wonder what interface the previous owner used?

Anyway, here are some pics just for amusement or “dirty, found it in the gutter” hardware pr0n

I just knew you would man!

*edit* - The PSU fan locked up about the third time I started the machine...should I replace it or is it not really needed? (I know next to nothing of A1000s)

Hey man,

A: I have seen it in pics before, so although I've no idea what it is, thought it was standard equipment?

B: Came with no FDD, installed that, blue and white flashing screen...RGB port was too corroded, works fine from component, but only B+W from RGB after a light clean...need to replace all ports (rusted). To protect other machines from "infection" I'm connecting with extension cables (which I'll throw away) until I replace all port connectors.

It has not been given any respect, rusting away like that

I'm sure you will restore to her former Glory,

BTW....
Burnt CD-200, 350 &888 compilations for CD32 last night, Mine works abs fine.
What do you mean when the programs won't run, do you just get a blank screen, If so try pressing Reset Once & wait.

Oh and the PCB is a daughterboard, fitted as std (BBoAH)

Nice hardware pron

C: Zetro........Whats that PCB.....

Nice hardware pron
A: I agree totally...very sad to see it in such a state...just call it The Six Million Dollar A1000..."I have the technology, I can rebuild him"...hahahaha

B: Pretty sure I've tried that (it's driven me to drink, so I can't remember every attempt). Will give it a shot anyway though

C: Yes, Zetro, even if standard I'd also like to know what it is and why it is there!

I thought that was the Shielded bit inserted onto the front panel...

It's been 18 years since I had an A1000

my findings lead me to these conclusions

A1002 3-State,
  • expands the A1000 with 512 kB Fast RAM
  • four 256k×4 DIPs
  • can be installed into A1000 PAL models only
  • connects into the sockets of six motherboard chips at location U1G, U1H, U2G, U2H, U3G, U4G
  • installing requires soldering
  • disable switch

No upgrade, WB shows 362792 after booting using KS disk (no physical KS ROM yet) & C= 256k front expansion.

Big Book shows the item in question as being the Daughter Board:

Ah well, would've been nice to have free expansion

@ fingers

Look at the bottom right hand side of that picture mate...

Looks like 512K ram to me.....Zetro??? what do you say..

Don't forget if it's Fastram and you are running KS1.2/1.3 & WB 1.3 may need to use addmem to enable the Ram

That daughterboard is normal, it's in all A1000's. There is a procedure to enhance the grounding on it to fix issues in side-expansion devices.

Had a Good read of BBoAH, I believe that may well be the 256K RAM that Kickstart gets loaded into.....
The Text also says that when ROMS are installed it can be modified for other uses???

Ah, cool. Although I didn't know where that particular memory was physically located, I do know the good bit. When ROMs are implemented this RAM is free'd up and doubles chip RAM capacity. Lucky I bought (awaiting arrival) a ROM card from DJBase

Now I just need one of those IDE adaptors I've seen on A.net , those are cool!

Heh, is the A1000 really so mystical.. :-)

The daughterboard is mainly filled with glue logic GALs, most of which were integrated into the Gary chip once the A500 was designed.

It seems the U1x and U2x chips are RAM, but it's hard to tell from that pic and I surely won't be digging my A1000 out to check.

Later A1000s didn't have the daughterboard.

I’m having trouble getting exact matches PCB-mount-pin-wise for some of the port connectors and would like a bit more internal space.

Given the ratty condition of the case…do you guys think towering this thing in a PC case to be Amiga-heresy?

The physical ability to utilise Z2 cards with available space is VERY appealing! I am aware that there is a simple hack to make this possible?

It’s going to happen anyway, but opinions are appreciated
