Corrupted HDF
I have recently found an old hdf that used to boot to workbench 3.1 but now says it is a non dos disk.
Is there any way to access the hdf or repair it? Any help would be appreciated. Just in case it helps, I've attached the winuae bootlog. |

You have to post winuaelog.txt. The bootlog is for the GUI only, it says nothing about the config or the HDF.
Do you use an old .uae config which booted the HDF before or did you attach the HDF to a new config? How big is the HDF file? If it is 1024 MB or larger, make sure that Surfaces and Sectors on the Add Hardfile page are set to the correct values. The values have to match those you used before. Old WinUAE versions always used 1 / 32, newer versions use different values for large HDF files. If you could compress and post the entire HDF somehow, it would make the analysis much easier. |

Show the first kilobyte of this hdf.
You can use DiskSalv or QuarterBackTools to recover the data. Sometimes a quick formatting and using the programs listed above helps. Do any experiments on a copy of the hdf. If you can't manage it then send the hdf. I'll see if I can recover something from that hdf. |

You should not try any recovery actions before you know what has gone wrong. As pointed out above the HDF might not be corrupted, you just didn't add it with the right parameters. Trying to repair it although it is not damaged might cause damage beyond repair.

Thanks for all the replies - it's very much appreciated.
Unfortunately, using ultraedit to compare the dodgy hdf with a known working wb 3.2 hdf appears to show massive corruption. This was a 2GB hdf that I setup with WB3.1, MUI and loads of other useful stuff, but it looks like it's all gone. That's life ;/ I've now started again and when finished, will make a backup this time. After a lifetime working in IT I really should have known better. I blame my age Thanks again, and sorry if I wasted anyone's time. |

Nah. It's just like doctors, they're their own worst patients.

Do you still have that .hdf?
I could check it out. By posting it, zip or rar it. |
