PERSONAL PAINT 7.4 UPDATE: ARM NATIVE ACCELERATION FOR THE A600GS

A-EON Technology purchased rights to Personal Paint from Cloanto in 2014 which has led to notable development over the last decade for both Classic Amiga systems and Next Generation systems.


Personal Paint has a rich record of being bundled with home computers over the years. In 1996 PPaint 6.4 was part of the Escom's Amiga 1200 Magic Pack. A-EON's latest update to this famous paint package accelerates 1080P and larger high resolution screens. 1080P is the resolution that most HDMI televisions operate at and the default screen mode of the A600GS. The drawing tools at this resolution would ordinarily be very slow. However they have now been significantly accelerated by using ARM native code.
The latest Personal Paint 7.4 from A-EON is ready-to-run on the A600GS and will bring a nostalgic paint package experience to modern 1080P televisions.

Trevor Dickinson, A-EON’s co-founder commented: “Personal Paint became the leading easy-to-use Amiga program for bitmapped graphics and animation and was one of the first to support AGA and RTG. We developed updated versions for both 68K and PowerPC, and it's great to see the ARM accelerated version joining the family."

Personal Paint 7.4 will be launched in Q2/2024 on the A600GS computer system.

Would be cool if 68k version could use the ARM CPUs on the ZZ9000 for some slow filters / operations ;-)

It really is Great news that Personal Paint is being updated.

From the picture though I just had some thoughts…

It would be nice to have some other default screen sizes available, like 800 x600 etc, although perhaps you can just enter them manually and save them?

But what I really wish, is that they would make the brush shapes (all 11 variants) on the side of the main toolbar, an option for the user to display or not (maybe an option in a menu or in tooltypes), since in my opinion it disfigures the clean aesthetics of PPaints original interface, and it's usefulness is somewhat questionable, especially since you already have the rather neat 9 "brush wells" popup that you can store your own brushes in. Oh… there's a point, why not make the "11 brush shapes" display in a popup toolbox like the hidden "brush wells", that would be elegant and more consistant.

will there be a 7.4 update for m68k? As a buyer and beta-tester of previous 7.3c I'd be interested... I'd like to use it under WinUAE.

I was very happy to see an update to PPaint when 7.3 came out but that quickly changed to disappointment when I actually brought it, for the following reasons:

1. Sold as compatible with a plain 68000 CPU but it wasn't compiled for it … so obviously doesn't work!

2. A recompiled version (with some other fixes) was produced by the developer in May 2019 but this is still not available to customers (now July 2024), who paid for & registered the product on AmiSphire!

3. Personally I sent three emails requesting this working version but didn't receive any reply so I finally gave up!

If they do release a version for 68000 hopefully they will provide an option to not show those extra brushes along the edge of the Tool Bar, without removing the actual Tool Bar itself. Unless using them it's more of a hindrance than help on High Res. Screens. I would also like to see a save in JPEG option. I wish all involved well with new versions going forward & hopefully things will be done a bit differently than they were with 7.3.

Is PPaint like DPaint, I loved that and its Boy King picture...

I have a soft spot for both DPaint and PPaint. I definitely prefer the latter working with RTG 8-bit modes and working on my TKG mod I've rediscovered that but for just AGA modes, DPaint is lovely.
