Best A1200 demos?
I have been away from the demoscene since 1992, and was wondering what are the best demos to run on my A1200, I'm not fussy about the vintage, more interested in quality and content, and hopefully show off the AGA capability.
I have an MBX card fitted in my machine with a 68881 FPU & 8MB RAM, so hopefully I can push my machine a little further. Also I noticed when unpacking some demos, they contain .exe files, I had a little problem unpacking demos on a nearly full CF, so not been able to test as yet, but I presume these run on Amiga, despite being PC files? Very few AGA demos (if at all) were designed to run on stock A1200 since the late 90's.
I'd estimate that over 95% of AGA demos from the last 20 years were made for the 68060 CPU. The rest mostly target the 68030. |

Stock 1200 demos the first few years. Then a lot of 030 demos, then mostly 060 for AGA in the last 20 or so + years The exe files are just executable files, some use demos .exe ,some do not Btw a good archive is here: ftp://malus.exotica.org.uk/pub/jpvs_scene_releases/ But for stock 1200 you need to go earlier for most demos.. For the A500 there is a lot of new productions though ..

Like mentioned here already, you will need a 060 card for most demos targeting the A1200. There are still a few every now and then though.
Check this list: https://www.pouet.net/prodlist.php?p...&order=thumbup At least Nexus7 on the first page (from 94 and is a must see) should work on your A1200. |

Thanks for all your suggestions, I wish I knew where to look for a 060 accelerator. Amibay site registration page is broken, I have no idea where else to look for one. Does anyone know of one for sale?

@NovaCoder thanks for that demo, I missed that one. Just watched it on my CD32 060 Some good effects if a little similar throughout.
@Lektroid the main thing with the upcoming modern 060 cards is getting hold of the CPU. Prices and availability have gone nuts. You have the vintage option (Apollo and Blizzard) but as you might have seen on Amibay an Apollo 1260 is +£600 |

If you don't mind a bit old school (and this is Amiga after all), there's a ton of stock A1200 demo's you missed in the 92' to 94' period.
If you can get a modern 020 board, then watching demos from the 95' to 98' 030 era might be passable. You also have several decades of OCS demo's to watch. I tend to search on pouet by 'thumbs up', and then check the year. There is an FPGA board being designed that looks to have 040 speed currently (but running 020 instructions). If an A1200 version follows, it could be worth waiting for, estimated price sub 200 euros. http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?...highlight=fpga |

If you have fast memory I'd imagine quite a few demos for 030 50Mhz would run but slowly. I think most users upgraded their 1200s pretty quickly so there aren't that many for stock machines.
You could try something like: https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=9270 And yes with a lot of demos the program has '.exe' for some reason. |
