A600 keyboard ribbon?
Hi,
Just dug out my old A600, and trying to get it going again, but having a problem with the keyboard. Is the small, white plastic harness at the end of the keyboard ribbon, supposed to detatch itself from the ribbon? I've tried placing the ribbon into the port, securing it with the white plastic harness, but get no reaction from the keyboard when I do this and boot up. I tried wiggling it about slightly, and pressing some keys, while it was on and I got some reaction, so the problem seems to be with the actual connection. Any tips on how I should secure this in place, or how I can clean the ribbon cable for a better connection? Really want to get it running again, so any help would be muchly appreciated!!! Cheers, Pete |

Is the ribbon damaged?
If so you might be able rescue it with one of those "conductivity pens" (this is probably the wrong name). These pens basically allow you to draw circuits, so you should be able to paint over the exposed lines on the connector and thus restore electrical flow. Clean all parts of the connection with alcohol (pure alcohol designed to clean/evaporate - not Jack Daniels'! ) Try wedging the connection with something non-conductive (e.g. paper) - I rescued a laptop this way. If all this fails then you need a new keyboard. You won't be able to find just a keyboard very easily so you'll probably have to buy a new A600. In that case you may as well get a A1200 ! |

Conductive paint, conductive marker pens etc all work well for repairs like this. If you're in the UK, haver a look at Maplin's website for info

I have seen A600 Keyboards come up from time to time on Ebay they generally go fairly cheap. If the white connector (which I think is just a cover for the connector on the motherboard) is the same as the A1200s then you will need to make sure the white part is sitting flush with the motherboard and make sure the ribbon is pushed as far into the connector as it will go. i had a simular prob with my A1200 and it turned out that because the white cover was not fitting flush with the motherboard the cable seem to feed into the white cover ok but was not making a proper connection on the motherboad when I made sure the cover was flush with the motherboard the ribbon connected ok.
