Lightbulb CARLOS ACE´s Collection

Hello,

I've uploaded to EAB Amiga File Server one of my CD's ("CD ACE 2") with Amiga stuff that i compiled in 24/02/1999 (yes, 1999!!!).

As soon i recover the "CD ACE 1" (this one compiled in 1998), i'll upload it too.

Before you try the files, please check it with an Anti-Virus.

Have Fun!!!

Hello,
First of all, thank you for sharing!
There is some interesting content to review.

but I just noticed that you made a rather common mistake unfortunately.
You should know that files without extension are, by default, considered as text files. They are therefore modified by a EOL conversion during the FTP transfer. Basically, the binary files are corrupted.

It is preferable to archive the files before the transfer, this protects them from alterations.

Personally, I prefer a raw copy of the CD

Note: The "CISCOHT.DMS" file is not infected by the Suicide Machine virus. This is a false positive.

If you use FileZilla, check this parameter :

Just checked two downloaded collections with Filezilla

As Crashdisk suggested the files with no extensions were corrupted

That's really incredible

I re-downloaded the collections with Binary mode enabled, now they works as excepted (indeed files with no extensions were most Amiga exes)

Hello !!!

Just renamed all executable files to .exe, text files to .txt (all crunched with Power Packer), updated the index files and also uploaded all CD Content to a single rar file for fast download.

Thanx for the help.

About Filezilla settings, it's strange anyway

Indeed i just checked another collection with files with no extensions and this one is correct !

So i can only guess that the various versions of Filezilla had different default settings

My Filezilla Pro configuration have the Default Transfer type: "Auto", and i never have that kind of problem about the files without extensions.

Make no mistake!
When you have the files online some files have been damaged but not all of them and I'll tell you why.

In case the client is under Windows (CR LF) and the server is under Linux like EAB's (LF) :

- When a file is uploaded, Filezilla performs an EOL conversion of the file without extension : $0D0A > $0A (medium risk)
So if the file contains this binary sequence $0D0A, it will become 1 byte smaller at each occurrence.

- When downloading, it is the reverse conversion : $0A > $0D0A (very high risk)

For example :
Utils/SuperEDC
Original > 27 336 bytes
Uploaded > 27 335 bytes (It was like this on the server when you first put it online)
Dowloaded > 27 431 bytes (that's how chip must have downloaded it)

To respond directly to what you have to say, the problem is not the option "Default transfer type" but "Treat files without extension as ASCII file".
Filezilla does warn the user that files will be corrupted if the wrong filetype is considered as ASCII...

EDIT:
Another interesting case > Games/UTILS/DOCS/Chips.txt
It is a text file with the appropriate extension but it has been compressed with PowerPacker ... it is now a binary file!
First upload > 1 619 bytes
Second upload (RAR) > 1 620 bytes

Here is the default configuration of FileZilla :

Main point here is that a famous program like Filezilla shouldn't do something like that

Binary mode should be the default IMHO and no interpretation of ASCII content also

I put in the Zone, 2 repaired DMS files that are extracted from the ACE 2 CD:
ELF1.DMS
HEIMDAL1.DMS
2 extra bytes and 2 missing bytes at different places...not common as an error!?

Crashdisk, thanx for the fixing.

But...this happens even in the CD RAR file?

No, the files were corrupted on the CD when you created it or when you extracted it. That's why I had previously suggested you to spread the CD extraction (.bin 2352 tracks in raw format). This allows you to check the integrity of the data on the CD and it also allows you to repair some errors.

the other advantage is also that due to the different file system, special names are kept, although in this case there do not seem to be any.

Hello chip,

The recovering it's almost done (from a CD that doesnt work well after 20 years, and some files that i recovered from an old hard drive that has some of files of the original one - the original source that crashed some years ago with almost everything that i've to the Amiga).

I'll try to finish this week.

About the CD 01, it was my first attempt to make a CD compilation. The games folder is organized in a different way but it have the same games of CD 2 plus different ones (to work with A1200, AGA versions and HD install's/HD versions), and also different utils.
