PS. I'll be happy to update the diagram with more info. about other pieces that moved around, like ReAction...
Well, OS4 may have been based on the 3.1 source code, but it carried over almost all OS 3.9 features, not just ReAction. Core things like the Workbench ARexx port, changes to icon selection, DefIcons, AsyncWB, RAWBInfo, Find etc. are all included in OS 4, as well as add-ons like AmiDock and a few others. Also, it includes a global Workbench help function, though I'm not sure if that's the basis for the 3.2 function or if that's an independent development.

Cool, interesting

I'll update my diagram!

I wonder... Short of diving into the change-logs, is there a place that lists all these "transfers" and additions between versions?

Cheers!

!
No. And there are several assumptions in this thread which are wrong. E.g. „find“ is a completely new program. You’ll have to read the changelogs to determine what is new, backported (and fixed/enhanced) or else, I‘m afraid.

Not really that I know of. This diagram is a little out of date now but kinda covers it in that you can see the API comes from 3.9, even though the code comes from 3.1. I might just say "Features" instead of ReAction between 3.9 and 4 in your case - calling out many individual items will just confuse an otherwise nice and clear diagram.

Hey Bobbob42 and Daedalus!

Ah well! I will keep my diagram as it is then, it's still more up-to-date than the one on Wikipedia...
Maybe one day I'll collect and analyse the change-logs but not today

Take care!

Can 3.1.4 be upgraded to 3.2 (ie. install 3.2 over the top) or does it require a clean install?

That's good to know thanks. I have my CD and Kickstart ROM's on order too (from AMIGAstore.eu). Was just gauging whether I needed to buy a spare compact flash card so I could keep my existing, nicely working setup intact.

Hi guys I'm guessing this has been asked but in case not 3.1.4 ROMs and 3.2 what's the difference? What's in one set but not in the other?

Thanks guys

My first post here. :-D

One small thing with the diagram: Reactions wasn't added to 3.1.4. It was added to 3.2.

3.2 has Kickstart 47.96 and Workbench 47.2. However, workbench.library itself is V47.33. I know, confusing.

Your diagram would need a lot of new connections to capture reality as it is: Many 3.1.4-components were updated 3.9 components, like workbench.library, shell, etc. There are also 4.x components in 3.1.4, though they are few.

About Reaction, Steady already wrote it was introduced back in 3.2, not 3.1.4. It also is not a backport from 4.1, to be precise, but a backport of OS4.0 Reaction, including all fixes subsequently made till 4.1FE plus additional ones and also some enhancements of 4.1 Reaction. (A straight backport of 4.1 Reaction was not possible for numerous reasons, OS3's Intuition feature set not being on par with OS4.1's among them).

For 3.2, there are a lot of OS4 backports, among them ASyncWB, DefIcons, RAWBInfo. Some new features are completely new programs albeit sharing the same name with 3.9 or 4.1 counterparts. And there are special cases like "Mounter", which is Olsen's ancient bugfixed GadTools version of its OS3.9 Reaction counterpart (unavailable to us).

For an even dizzier head, dive into the changelogs. :P

We could also add 3.2beta (v42/v43) to the mix, which was being developed to support the Walker architecture: https://www.gregdonner.org/workbench/wb_b32_40.html

Exciting shit
Native + RTG (CGX4) displays always worked fine in parallel, so you could use two screens at the same time, like having a multitasking game/demo or some software like scala running on native output and wb/internet apps on the RTG display, all will update. This still works fine with OS3.2. As for P96, a lot depends on the hardware you use, for example the current P96 does not allow proper use of native displays with B/CVisionPPC cards, lets hope that changes soon.

That website used there 3.2 for convienience purposes. AmigaOS 3.2 was never referenced as being either v42 nor v43. It was not referenced at all.

The website even quotes the lead developer at that time, Heinz Wrobel, as supporting the fact that it was just 3.1 what was used post Commodore.

Yet many people have visited this website during the years/decades as a reference and have assumed that AmigaOS 3.2 existed back in the day and it was the Walker's associated OS.

BTW, if you can get a glimpse at the Walker's hard drive, you will notice it is just 3.1 with the popular "magic pack" (Scala, Photogenics, etc.) and a SetPatch that patches the copyright message, nothing more. And the Kickstart was only fixed to accomodate the Walker hardware and change the copyright text.

Ironically, it worked before the option was introduced.
With my current setup, it does not, it always tries to force RTG 640x480

I also ordered CD+kickstarts from amigastore.eu two weeks ago but haven't heard anything. I mailed to ask for an update and still no word. Have you heard anything? I'm considering making a second order from somewhere but really I'm frustrated I can't just pay for an ISO download so I can at least try it in FS-UAE :-)
