It is an art without a shadow of a doubt, using the few pixels and colors available to create landscapes of this quality is something that, like normal painting, only a few can do. I'm glad that BitBeamCannon has an artist so equipped to do the graphic part of its games, and I'm looking forward to trying Daemon Claw.

Of course it's art.
And a very hard style of art. You need to describe shapes with very low res, and few colors, and it's amazing what some artist made. Or to put it simple: Any great pixel artist won't have much trouble switching to easier form of drawing, and opposite, getting into a quality pixel art takes a lots of practice and patience. |

Amazing talent! I like how it just 'comes together' and we can see the time lapse.
How long did this actually take though? |

I agree with this. It's amazing what some of the early pixel artists did with such chunky pixels and limited colours.

Actually I need to make my statement a little more to the point. I love pixel art - what I love most is modern day pixel art. I have great respect for what people did in the 8/16 bit era, but as an art form I am mesmerised by what artists do today with all the colours, lighting and shading. Just look at all the goodness in indie games that are just out or soon to come, it brings a tear to my eye.

There has to be a cut-off point for possibly resolution but definitely total number of colors in the palette/on screen otherwise it turns into digital photo-montage alternative IMO.
Pixel art, especially on something as restrictive as the Commodore 64 (check out the tiny little soldiers and scientist sprites in R.I.S.K. by The EDGE in fat pixel mode!) is indeed a real art form. Some people can do amazing oil paintings...some people make amazing Rodney Mathews fantasy art quality graphics for Amiga 1000 (Shadow of the Beast starting overground level graphics and game engine using all of OCS quirks). I call these people graphic experts, because they know what to do with those weird restrictions old machines had before PC VGA on 286 PC with only 1 restriction (256/16million colours only allowed). Even the Archimedes 256 colour mode is not like that (16 shades of 16 hues or something, certainly not AGA/VGA style any 256/16million for screen palette). The Street Fighter II Dhalsim knock-up for the C64 on youtube is amazing |

Art is toilet glued to a wall.
Art is a blue line on white canvas, called 'Untitled' (I think this sold for an obscene amount of money). Art is an empty, white canvas, also called 'Untitled' (if I remember correctly). Art is a Jackson Pollock painting, which is equivalent to old overalls covered randomly in paint. I wouldn't insult 'pixel art' by calling it 'art', if it was possible to avoid that word somehow. Alas, it seems to be etched into terminology so deeply, it's basically impossible to talk about graphics creation / creators without using the word 'art'. |
