Unhappy joystick fire button help (very bad mspaint image inside)

so I'm trying to fix my new 2nd hard spectrum joystick, it's black/red ones you may have seen them

my concern is the top button is really stiff but I dont think it's the button? I want to know if i can replace this popping metal stud with something softer is this a good idea? what sort of metal? it's that metal stud that is too stiff.

i know it's only a joystick but it's really to me.

the popping stud bit is the switch contact, it's probably spring steel. It would probably work if you could find something softer, for a while, but it would deform with use.
Check that the button moves freely first, if not find some sort of silicone grease to lubricate the pivot, and make sure it's not catching on the joystick shell.

Edit: the ultimate fix would be to mount a small microswitch in its place giving you nice positive clicky buttons, but that would require considerable work.

Hopefully they can be the same size of those from old (sorry for the word) Atari 2600 joysticks.

You can buy ten units for a £.
