Joystick convertor idea!

Could this work:

1 x generic pc joypad - nothing special! 4button with no fancy turbo settings etc!

1 x amiga joystick - powerplay cruiser or zipstick, standard jobbie with microswitches etc!

1 x 9pin plug - for amiga joystick to plug into

some 9core wire!

what i would like to do is strip down the pc joypad to the board and lead! then solder the 9 core wire to each directional pad and fire button (just the two for the amiga)
then wire up the 9pin plug!
fit this into a project box to make it look tidy.

with this box i could plug in an amiga or atari joystick and the pc would still think its a pc joypad! the amiga joystick would act as the directional and fire buttons for the pc joypad and you wouldnt need any fancy drivers, just the standard windows stuff!

crazy idea eh LOL!

or you could just make a 15 - 9 pin extension cable, instead of killing the joypad - course if it's a cheap and nasty PC jobbie then it might be worth it.

is there one that uses nothing but resistors/diodes?

Why building an interface ?
Competition Pro and Quickshot joysticks with PC connector is something one just has lying around at home

Yup

You can connect an old Joy to the PeCe Parallel Port, you just have to make an adapter 9 pin -> 25 pin

yeh but ive already done all that guys!

i want to use the guts of a pc joypad as the adaptor... people who build mame arcade cabinets mess around with ideas like this, i did a search but only found a keyboard hack!

im going to try this pc joypad thing out anyway! use an old crap soundcard just in case the 15pin port goes nuts or summin!

Sounds OK... should even work with a PC USB pad as the 'sacrifice'

I'd be careful using anything like a CD32 pad, with extra circuitry etc, but a vanilla Amiga/Atari/C64/Sega with up to 2 (maybe 3) buttons should work fine.

thats my plan m8! just to use a bog standard, single fire button joystick.

Hmm... Did a quick search, and there's a couple of adapters on the net, that use only resistors, diodes & transistors:

Supports 2 joysticks

Only supports one, but also has pinouts for a PC joystick Y-splitter, so you could connect 2 adapters to the one PC port.

Either way, could be cheaper than killing a PC gamepad?
(a little more work though)

Why don't you hack a USB Sidewinder? I think it should be possible with some direct wireing>?

Would be swell to have a 9-pin SubD to USb joystick interface, so I can connect my Sega Genesis pad to the Mac

I say this project is only woirth it if for making a USB interface. OTherwise...

Actually, you only need six or seven wires.. :-)

up, down, left, right, fire, ground, +5v (optional)

Go for it! If you want to make a clean hack, you can follow the traces from the contact pads to somewhere else on the board and solder your wires there. That way you can trail the wire + D9 from the back of the pad and still have it working like it should, in case you want to make full use of it. (more firebuttons, for example)

Also, you could trail a wire from the joystick to separate the other firebutton.. This can also be done by swapping the entire cable coming from the joystick, it'll be neater.

The Hardwarebook will come in handy for the pinout.
