Amiga 500 Joystick 1 Port not working

Probably an easy one for you guys but hope someone is able to give me some advice on this.

The Joystick 1 port on my Amiga 500 seems to have stopped working, only the mouse buttons work but the cursor doesn't move at all.

Borrowed and tried some other mice and the same thing happens with them.

Not really fiddled with the insides of an Amiga before so would be great to find out how to fix this?

Thanks in advance

Put joystick in mouse port and move it, does mouse pointer move few pixels? Does mouse in joystick port and joystick in joystick port work? (Use some game for testing)

Most common problem is damaged U15 chip but first check mouse port +5v pin. (Mouse needs +5v, joystick don't)

I've put the joystick into the mouse port and I can move the mouse pointer a few pixels but thats it.

Both the mouse and joystick both work perfectly in the joystick port.

Great, problem has to be missing +5v
Check resistor R401 first.

Just opened her up and had a look, you're right, checked and the R401 resistor looks burnt out.

Is this easy to replace and repair? Wouldn't know where to start, sorry about all the questions, really want to get my Amiga working again

It is normal 4.7Ohm resistor.

Quick and dirty fix would be to desolder R408 (joystick port +5v resistor) and use it as a R401 replacement.. (If you never need to use mouse in joystick port)

Do not replace it with a jumper, next time (if/when) mouse port +5v shorts to ground will kill something much more expensive to repair

The caveat to disabling +5V to the joystick port is that autofire won't work any more if your joystick is so equipped.

But autofire is for lamers anyway. :-)

This seems to be the same issue with my A500. I am a little leery about replacing the resistor myself only because I fear messing up on a multi-layer PCB, if you remove the tinning in the hole, the whole thing is buggered.

Fortunately, I know a guy who has been fixing them for years and he is very handy with a soldering iron :-) Who knows, maybe he'll teach me a thing or two.

I had the same problem in two A500. (well in one it still worked but resistor was visibly darkened)
btw, iirc, that resistor is 0,5W and not the usual 0,25W.
@Jope
but besides autofire, mouse won't work in it too. and there are games that use two mice.

Then blame it to the CIA, the chip, of course!

Thanks for all the advice, I'll post once I've had a go at fixing it, with either a sad face or a smiley face.

Amiga Joystick port 2 not working

Hi, i have a similar problem but with the Joystick port 2.
I have two joysticks and i try the both on Port 2 and are not working at all.
In Joystick 1 both are working, as the mouse too.
I ' ve seen two resistors R408 and R401 are already
changed by the previews Amiga owners and seemed to be in good condition.
Do you have any idea about this???
Also the pins are well soldered on the PCB.

It could also be the multiplexer dealing with the controller port.
See my thread here where I go through an issue with my joystick port 2:
http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=87168

Maybe the multiplexer died, or the resistor pack did.
