mp3 without AHI hippoplayer, eagleplayer

Can HippoPlayer and EaglePlayer play MP3 files without AHI installed? For instance, if I disable AHI support in HippoPlayer, the system freezes when trying to play MP3 files, the same happens with EaglePlayer. I have OS version 3.2.2.1 and the latest ROM, mpega.library from Aminet for 060, and the latest possible versions of HippoPlayer and EaglePlayer. I can't figure out how to solve the problem.

EaglePlayer only plays MP3 when I enable AHI Amplifier; otherwise, the entire system hangs.

If you don't mind using another player you can try DeliTracker2. Its mpega player should work fine.

Ages ago, someone wrote a faster version of Mpega too.

EaglePlayer needs only mpega.library to plays MP3. Of course you must use real playback values. If you set/choose too high replay values then system will be freezed.

What exactly do you mean by system freezing? Does the mouse cursor move?
Which AHI mode are you using which works with mp3 playback?

After turning on the MP3, I cannot move the mouse, there is no sound, the system freezes, and the only option is to reset. However, if I enable AHI at HIFI 14-bit 44kHz, the MP3 plays correctly on Hippo and Eagleplayer.'

I have the following question: why does the system freeze when I turn off AHI?

I could provide you a version of Hippo which puts out detailed logs into a console window (or into serial port), this could help in pinpointing where exactly the freeze happens.

It's interesting that both Eagle and Hippo freeze in the same way. Have you tried DeliTracker? What's the version of mpega.library you're using?

Everything is fine now; somehow, I had the mpega68020 library, and after replacing it with mpega68060FPU, everything returned to normal, and MP3 plays on Paula without AHI. Thank you for your support.

This still leaves some questions unanswered
You probably have a 060 with FPU. This should be able to run the mpega68020 library as well. The 68020fpu library instead should cause a slowdown if it contains FPU instructions not supported by the 68060.

Furthermore, for both Paula and AHI playback the usage of mpega.library is the same: in goes MP3 data, out comes decoded PCM data. This is then output into either Paula or AHI. It makes no sense that it will only work with AHI and not on Paula depending on the mpega library version

I am surprised by this fact myself, but indeed, when I switched the library from the 68020 to one dedicated for the 68060, whether with or without FPU, everything returned to normal. Now it plays correctly on Paula and on Paula with AHI enabled.

Or maybe it's something else after all. I had Hippo MPEG preferences set to HI for quality and 4 for MPEG frequency. When I changed it to 1, everything started working correctly. Additionally, I have set Paula mixing to 44kHz through Picasso using the command SetEnv EnvArc:Picasso96/AmigaVideo 31kHz.

This is actually a bug in v2.59: Setting "MPEGA freq div" to something else than 1 and playing mp3 could lead to a crash. A fix is available
(https://eab.abime.net/showpost.php?p...&postcount=681) which can be used until the next version comes up.

eagleplayer don't like rare or new mpega libraries to play mp3 files

use the original library, the last version is 2.4 and surely all will work fine
