Philips CD-i discs
Hi,
I'm having my first experience with the Philips CD-i discs and it's not a good start. I read somewhere that they could be played in a CD32 and also most DVD players that play VCDs. Apparently this is not the case. I don't own a CD-i player or an FMV cartridge myself so I can't test the discs, but I thought they would work on a normal DVD player which can play VideoCDs or at least show up their contents on CD/DVD-drive. So, before I go barking on the eBay-seller for selling me defective discs I'll ask you guys. Are these discs supposed to be readable by computer CD/DVD-drives (both Win and Mac refused), DVD players which can play VCDs (didn't work on mine) or even on the CD32 FMV (which I'm planning to get later on)? If it's a no to all three then I got two movies for anyone who wants to buy them. |

The CD32 adapter allows it to play standard VCD/Mpeg discs and will not work with CD-I discs (different format).
CD-I discs will not play on anything other than a CD-I player and i think philips did release a dvd player that could also read CD-I discs. You may be able to get an emulator or some kind of software that will allow you to play it on PC but i have not looked into this myself |

There are probably a few CDI VCD's which don't use the Greenbook standard, but the most movies shouldn't work on a DVD player.

Doh!
I'm quite sure I read somewhere that one could play CD-i video discs on a CD32 and the magazine even reviewed them. Maybe I'm not remembering right then.. |

I have an FMV adapter for the sega saturn and that allows me to play Mpeg and VCD's but not CD-I discs, i think this will be the same with the CD32

I have seen them play in PCs with an MPEG card fitted, but with no regard to the interactive feature of the discs, i.e. the video clips are simply shown sequentially, just like an audio CD player, only a video one instead. (This facility can be quite useful to reveal the video clips that you have never seen on a disc, because you couldn't play the game well enough! ) Quote:

IIRC cd-i is not vcd, its more than just mpeg movies. there exists two emulators, one for free (not that good working) and a commercial one. http://www.cdiemu.org/ and cd-ice (look into the zone).
Edit: @prowler: at the same time |

Just read that a lot of CD-I branded movies are normal VCD's. Maybe you had bad luck with yours, or your multi-format DVD player has problems to read them.

Thanks for the links, guys.
Unfortunately I don't posses any of the CD-i roms and there was no mention if the emu would play video discs (and judging by the short list of games that work I doubt it) so that emulator is of no use for me right now. So, if any of you people who own the real thing want to buy The Hunt for the Red October or Patriot Games let me know. |

So, the titles in the first list should work on a CD32 too then?
Well, found the link I remembered. I guess it only tells half the truth after all. http://stason.org/TULARC/pc/amiga/cd...Video-CDs.html |

If you have an multi-format DVD player that don't cares about any standards you could try to start the "DAT" file (MGEG-1) from the CD-I movies. I guess it's worth a try.

No luck. It just spins the discs for a minute or so and says it can't read them.

There are two versions of Star Trek VI as it seems. Of course you could try to rip the"DAT" MPEG-1 file with Isobuster, then burn a Standard VCD with Nero. Anyway, i guess you want to watch the original CD's.

Hi All,
Does anyone know *why* these CD-i films are split into two camps? I haven't yet managed to play any successfully on my multi-format, multi-region DVD players. (I haven't tried my PS2 with AR MAX yet! ) prowler |

(Assuming you're talking about CD-I movie discs here, not software titles)
I think what happened in Philips went to market before the standard was agreed. So the earlier movie titles were CD-I discs, and they will only play on proper CD-I hardware, except for maybe PC emulators or clever hardware MPEG-1 boards. The later movie titles were VideoCD, after the standard was agreed. They will play on your CD32 with FMV module. You can tell of the front cover which type of CD it is because there will be a logo. I have Star Trek Generations on VCD somewhere I think. Played it to death on my PC using software decoding on a P133 - it was the only way I could watch films at Uni! |

There is currently a disc on eBay: item 170313379913. This is the VideoCD type that will play on various systems including the CD32.
By the way I'm pretty sure almost all DVD players will play VideoCD's, they are usually backwards compatible. |
