How to kill a program in workbench?
It happened to me a lot in the past. Having a crashed program in workbench wasting memory and not being able to kill it.
Is there a program like Linux's XKill for amiga ? Edit: I am using wb2.1 |

You cannot kill a task in AmigaOS. AmigaOS does not have resource tracking, so nobody but the program itself knows which resources belong to it, so nobody can free all the memory.
You can try a program like ARTM or XOpa. But these programs usually can only kill a single resource, for example close a window or remove a message port. And you can easily make other programs crash by removing the wrong resource by accident. It's better to use the Ctrl-A-A method. |

I use a program called SCOUT.
http://aminet.net/package/util/moni/Scout_os3 So long as the frozen app has not crashed WB, I find it can close most frozen drawers and apps. Whether or not it completely gets rid of all traces, I dont know. It certainly allows me to finish up my work and do a quick reboot though. |

No, it doesn't. AmigaOs does not have any resource management, so you do not know which process a resource belongs to. This just leaves the system in an unstable state - actually, after a crash, you do not know in which state the system is.

No, it's not. Before the crash, the system was working. Now, if you attempt to release resources of the crashed system, you do not know which process these resources belong to, thus you cannot know whether to release or not to release them - AmigaOs does not track resources.

At least some of these programs might give the user some extra time so that they can save any critical work before the inevitable crash occurs, but the presumption that the system is ok in the mean time simply isn't true. Once you've saved whats critical, always a 3 finger salute on the keyboard and start from a fresh reboot. |
