Even for a film license, Akira is bad. Whether they were the developer (Turbo Outrun, Platoon) or the publisher (Total Carnage, Gulp, Akira), ICE were guilty of some atrocities.

I was thinking the other day, there really were not many decent film license Amiga titles were there? Addams Family was pretty fun, Lethal Weapon is a personal favorite, what else was good?

The Indy Last Crusade adventure is the only one in the LemonAmiga top 100. Robocop 3 has its fans, Blues Brothers did well (perhaps because it wasn't made to tie in with the film, it was potentially more of a 'labour of love' 10 years later by fans of the film?), Flight of the Intruder is a pretty good flight sim, Batman The Movie and the Untouchables were well rated at the time, beyond that I'm struggling. Most were cash-ins.

Batman comes to mind... not my favorite, but I know some who got Batman pack and were happy with it...

Untouchable was another crappy movie license for example.

I downloaded Akira but forgot to transfer over the file so tonight, I promise.

Last nights haul was 3 new plays and 1 old one.

Z-Out
Oh.. another mega-difficult R-Type knock off complete with the little module thing that attaches to the nose of your ship. This one would probably be good if I had insane spider reflexes. 2/5.

Venom Wing
What the beep? Your ship moves in a tiny area of the screen, the screen scrolls at the speed of smell and occasionally you turn into an owl that can't shoot. I have no idea what is going on and playing three times did not help that at all. This feels like an experiment. 1/5

Chuck Rock
After finding Prehistorik a bit underwhelming, Chuck Rock was quite pleasant. Well animated, fun and the levels and controls go well together. One I will definitely play more. 4/5.

Pool of Radiance
Perhaps controversial since the other Gold Box games have more options or better controls but I absolutely love this one. Tactical combat, a fairly open ended RPG experience and one of the first (if not the first) true AD&D based games. Completed it three times. 4/5 but I understand if its only a 3/5 for you and if you are not an RPG fan it may only be a 2.

Skipped:
Chuck Rock (CD32 version)

If you do play Akira, I have a request: find an ADF with a level skip trainer. I hope one exists, I see a +4 trainer on planetemu so I hope it has a level skipper. And then after rage quitting the motorcycle level, skip it and play the game from there. It IS a delirious but interesting run & gunner followed by a not actually bad horizontal shoot em up section. But the first level is a crime against humanity.

I love Chuck Rock, both games. Can't have enough cartoony colourful games with huge sprites and funny sound effects. Also one with a surprising amount of simulated physics.

Not heard of Venom Wing, but it scores badly on LemonAmiga, seems barely finished and very confusing, and with no manual on HoL there's little chance of working it out. Coded by the Dutch guy who later ported Worms to the PC, incidentally. A Thalamus game that only the Newsfield mags reviewed, and they liked it, weird that...

I'd heard that about Akira actually, that the first level is especially bad but its merely below average after that.

Whoever gave Venom Wing 80% must have been on something strong...

Weren't Thalamus and Newsfield owned by some of the same people (note Oli Frey (RIP)'s involvement with both)? Is it unfair to speculate that the something strong involved may have been pound signs? Sometimes a strange and initially confusing game reveals itself to be innovative and complex, sometimes a seemingly bugged game is enough fun to override that - but I doubt this was one of those times.

Blimey! Well, that does explain the rating

Turns out there is a long play and it does look like it gets a bit better but clicking through it, I was hard pressed to find any inspiration to actually make it that far.

Z-Out needs practicing but it's definitely very good and possible up to level 4. Level 5 is horrible. What helps here is 2 player mode where you don't restart the area!! Also lots of fun (co op mode)

Chuck Rock is a bit dull in terms of gameplay but very funny/cartoonesque and definitely high above Prehistorik. Missing a good and non repetitive soundtrack to be played on top of sfx. I love the very small monsters that attack with a huge mouth, and also the one which attacks with a hidden hammer bigger than the monster itself. The dinosaur that craps on you is also "innovative".

Also the face of the sabre-tooth tiger at the end of level 2 when he attacks. Priceless.
