Super League 2021: Round 12 - PGA Tour Golf

PGA Tour Golf [lemon] [hol]
This is the sixth game from 1991 we've played this year. The start of probably the most successful golf game series. It went on to be known as Tiger Woods PGA Tour until ending in 2015. Recently EA announced that PGA Tour will be returning in 2022.

Random fact. PGA's lead designers, Lee Actor and Dennis Koble, had their last known game credits on 1999's Xena: Warrior Princess for the Playstation. Until Dennis ruined it by releasing an iOS game. Anyway, go read the big interviews with Lee and Dennis on Atari Compendium.

Round Ends: 23:59 (UK Time) on Saturday 16th October 2021

Rules:
  • Get the best score you can, during this round.
  • Post screenshots of your score in this thread, and write the score nearby.
  • Scores to be achieved without save-states, trainers, passwords, and cheats.
  • No continues or infinite score leeching.
  • Finish the game and post a screenshot of the end for the completion star.
  • Full rules and info are HERE.
Special Rules and Scoring:
  • Use Professional Tees.
  • Play Southwind and Scottsdale on the second disk of courses. Add the scores together.
  • If you only play one course you will receive 200 'bonus points' for the other course.
  • If for whatever reason you don't play every hole, you will receive 10 points for each unplayed hole.
  • Get 63 (8 under par) on both courses for the completion star.

I've added info on the completion star to the first post. If you can get 63 on both courses (8 under par) you get the star. Something to challenge you to beat your personal best.

I hadn't planned on using the completion star for this round because we are not playing the full game. However, as there is interest in it we can definitely do something.

I appreciate your enthusiasm Stevengton, the main issue is that the completion star should be available to anyone playing only the part of the game needed to submit a score. Which is why I wasn't going to have it originally, because I agree that the tournament makes more sense. That is a proper completion. But if we look at the star as a recognition of being a top player in this competition then we can set it by a score for each course. To compensate for not being a true completion that should be a high goal.

I've taken a look at the previous PGA and European Tour round scores to see what's possible. I'm going with -8 (63) on both courses. That's nearly half the course as birdies or equivalent. Somewhere between trying to beat Switchblade II and Banshee.
Even if some games are easier than others, I think the completion star should be, in general, awarded to anyone fulfilling the round goal even if you don't get a good score.
Meaning that if a game has a end, you get it if you reach the end (you run a distance - no score involved).
If a game has no end you get it if you reach the 'x'th level (you run a distance determined by the round rule - not by score)
And if, like here, only some courses are played, you get it as long as you achieve the end of the courses (you run a distance - no score involved).

That's a valid way of looking at it. The way I've approached it is that the star is awarded for doing something more than submitting a single score. It's true that someone could submit a score for just one hole (because of the way this round is set up to encourage maximum participation) but considering who will be taking part I think we can expect everyone will find it easy to complete both courses if they want to. Even if it is a terrible score. That means everyone will get the star. Which has little difference to nobody getting the star. All I'm doing is setting an arbitrary value to give meaning back to the star. Something akin to other rounds. Ultimately what we are discussing is what level of challenge is appropriate to award the star.

Of course the type of the game play a role but it's not only submitting a score that allow the completion star. Managing to complete all the levels defined for the round grant it.

So, yes, with a golf game it's more easy to complete all the levels as you don't get eliminated by the opponents. But at the end, golf is like that (and you have to play all the holes - as if you don't, no completion star).

This discussion about "relative easiness" reminds me this 2019's round 7. It was a nice round indeed.

I can't fault your logic. It's consistent with the idea of finishing a game. That's why I wasn't going to use the star originally, as we aren't playing the full game or beating it in a significant way.

Though it is a fun idea to be flexible with the star at times like this, and use it as a way to set another challenge for players. I can understand if people think I've set the goal too high.

Either way. I'm happy to go with any majority opinion on it. The star is new this year. If there are more opinions calling for some change we can work it out.

I missed that Dizzy round. Looks like it would have been a nice change of pace.

Thanks to all those who joined me on tonight's stream It was really good fun despite the rather humbling attempt at Southwind. Scottsdale was a better attempt and hopefully I've now started to find my range for another go at some stage. Link to the video is here if you want to relive the action.

Southwind: 87

Scottsdale: 69

I've found Southwind much harder than expected, and it lives up to it's name with lots of 18mph winds.

Agree. And even with a good swing it happens that the ball deviate more than expected because of this

That's it!

Stevengton has proven to be a true master of PGA Tour and strolls away with the gold clubs. Mitch J Frenzal and LinesMachine also put in excellent scores for second and third places. Well played everyone, see you in the 19th hole.

1st - Stevengton
2nd - Mitch J Frenzal
3rd - LinesMachine

Our double round of curiosities is coming up soon.

Voting for round 14 will start next week due to the 4 week double round.
