Joystick port problems?
My old a500 seems to be working fine... apart from the fact that there is something wrong with the joystick\mouse port. Once I plug the joystick in (I tried with 2 different joysticks... hard enough to think that both of them are faulty) the fire button seems to be working properly, but the cursor on the screen hardly moves, both on the amigaDOS boot page and on the workbench's desktop screen. Playing any game is virtually impossible since I do not have response at all (again, except for the button). Does anyone have any idea about what may be wrong?
 The port itself seems neat - no oxide, every pin seems solid, clean and straight enough. I'm beginning to wonder if something inside has leaked and ruined any circuits... inside everything seems ok, but maybe I haven't checked the right place on the board (any hints???) I don't have any mouse or other hardware to do further tests... I hope it's not yet the time to look around for another a500... |

cursor? you need mouse in port 1 and joystick in port 2
if you connect joystick in mouse port it will work exactly like you described |

CIA chips get mighty pissed off if you plug and unplug while powered on...

Quite true.
The A1500 I recently acquired (now a 2000 because I put a HDD in it and peeled the A1500 label off  ) had knackered CIA chips when I bought it. The guy demoing it for me kept unplugging stuff while it was on, and I kept asking him not to, but the computer seemed fine... until I got it home. I ended up scrapping my old A500 to extract the CIA chips and this fixed the A2000 up a treat. I now obey the big sticker on the back of the 2000 and never do any pluggage while under power.

When my CIA chips were playing up my Workbench would crash but I could play games. I ended up stripping my A500 and going through each chip or set of chips one at a time. The CIA chips I took out of the A2000 went into the A500 to test them and the thing won't even boot now!
