Lords of the Rising Sun: Horse Pursuit, how to kill General?

I finally managed to get hold of a working game since to this forum (IPF-copies). The good old feeling quickly came back (although I never noticed this game being that easy back then ).

So, anyways, I still have this one problem. When hunting down the enemy general after a battle I manage to kill enough of his soldiers (by sword, not by running them over) to have the general finally appear on the screen. But then my problems begin:
I just can't manage to hit him. When I run into him my rider falls down and he can escape. And when I ride just past him I can't hit him with the sword. I even saved game states with UAE and tried maybe a hundred times, but no luck.

How do you hit the general in the end, do you have to make a certain approach on your horse?

I have the same problem. I can kill the soldiers but can't manage to hit the general. Riding him down does not work.
A hint on how this can be done would be great.
