Blizzard 1240 - replacing 68040 with 68060
Hi :)
Thanks to the joy of eBay I just won a Blizzard "1240-1260" card with a 40MHz 68040 pre-installed. Assuming it arrives and works, and that I can get a 66MHz 68060 (I'm aware of the EC / LC versions :), should it work in the Blizzard? The crystal on the board will be 80MHz given a 2:1 ratio for 68040, so will be perfect for overclocking the 68060's 1:1 ratio, but I also need to reduce the chip voltage from 5 to 3.3V - is there a small mod I can do to the Blizzard for this? Cheers, Gavin. |

Try and get an MC68060RC50 with an E41J mask (aka rev 6) as it will run much cooler and more stable at higher clock rates.
Talk to PG (Per Gunnar) over at Amiga.org for details on his 040-060 upgrade service. |

the 040/40mhz is very fast
the 060 is only a bit faster than the 040/40mhz I think there is no sense on upgrade it..even you will lost compatibility with games and programs cause the 060 is a "special" cpu on the other way PG at amiga.org only make services upgrades to apollo boards only...not really sure though bye |

@laser
I am pretty sure that PG, did a *how to* on blizzards... its been a while since i looked at the site, I am also under the impression that a 40mhz 040 will only produce 60 mips (ish) and the 060@50 will pump out nearly 90mips... and once you clock this up well.... obvious really.... |

Thanks for the replies - alas they didn't address the question of how to change the voltage from 5 to 3.3V on the Blizzard board
Any takers? (And even if the 060 wasn't much of an upgrade (which isn't the case at all) it'd at least run cooler!) Last edited by gdhgdh; 04 October 2007 at 21:12. Reason: fleh :) |

http://http://xoomer.alice.it/dario.manzoni2/1260.html 3.2 May help - how's your French? Not helpful @ present but there is a site with guides to upgrading all these cards... ...I'm @ the wrong 'pute @ present so don't have the link... ...I'll post it when I can if you don't find first. |

hmmm i cannot seem to find the webpage now that explains how to do it yourself...
from memory you have to to change the 5volt LT15xx to LT1585 a 3.3 volt regulator. obviously you will need to change the cpu and finally you need to "update" the firmware chip... now the latter i honestly cannot remember wich chip and you will obviosly need a bios file... if memmory serves, you actualy have to replace the chip as the one onboard is not re-programmable..... I am sorry I cannot be more help, please note the above is from memory...... alas the link i have doesn`t work and the 25 mins of google time resulted in pants Last edited by Zetr0; 04 October 2007 at 23:45. Aye, I found that page when searching, and did see the French 040 -> 060 one. My French is Not Good.. I might give the babelfish a go and see what comes.
From pics on the web I couldn't see any jumper for voltage, so replacing a regulator sounds like the way to go... As for the BIOS, that's another matter. Even if I got hold of an EPROM blower, where would I get the image? I'm sure someone here would be happy to send me a copy, but how would they get it into a file? |

Ahh! Just use a 330 Ohm resistor to drop from 5V to 3.3V - clever!
Reading the article in 'Franglais' is most entertaining "Thus envisage an inverter, of the patient and Coke" - never a truer word spoken. Last edited by gdhgdh; 05 October 2007 at 00:03. Reason: typo |

PG does / has done blizzard boards but you are right he does specialise in Apollo boards.
A 50MHz 060 is MANY times faster than a 40MHz 040. |

I've got a 'real' Blizzard 1260 - I could take some close-ups for comparison if that would help.
I'm sure Zetr0 would be happy to see more bare components Still @ the wrong 'pute for those links... |

Closeups are always a good thing for the sake of posterity
I'll get in touch with PG if I decide that I'm going to risk desoldering the 040 |
