Just a thought, the .rar files I have been trying to extract have ADF's within them, could this be the problem????

In my limited experience, it really shouldn't matter what's contained within the .RAR file, the files should extract if everything has setup correctly...

Anyway, I'm sure the l33t master idrouge will be able to advise / solve

I would have thought the same, but if it's trying to unpack an archive within an archive, I'm not sure what would happen.

An .ADF is not an archive. As far as the RAR program is concerned it should just extract

...and even if it was an archive, it should still extract and then you would have to then do post extraction on the file.

I have installed XAD and the Xad RAR. I haven't installed the keyfile seeing as you had trouble with it.

I made a rar file in Windows of an ADF. Copied it to a WinUAE dir.

Fired up WinUAE with my A1200 config, opened a shell and typed >
XADUnfile Work:adf.rar ram:. Everything extracted O.K.

I did find that XAD wouldn't extract a small .rar file and a large .rar file took quite some time. Unrar worked with all .rar files and was a lot quicker than XAD.

I tried to reply to your post lastnight when I realised I'd confused ADF & DMS but the site kept saying database error until bedtime, thanks for trying to help

Thanks for looking into this, I still can't unarc .rar files with xad (however .zip .lha etc work just fine) but now I've upped the memory to 8mb fast at least Unrar seems to work

That's interesting. You seem to have two versions of the RAR library installed at the same time:

I hadn't noticed that!! there were indeed 2 RAR's in Libs:xad/ I checked the filename length and no other characters 2 files same name in same directory how???

anyways I have deleted the 1.7 version and having a little more success now

I'll test a bit more tho

There is a xadmaster keyfile on Aminet, I installed it and thereafter got a "software failure" at EVERY boot time (although pressing the LMB appeared to then boot fine) I don't know why that should be but I thought I would warn people.

Oh! and it even persisted after removing it and all references to it (you have been warned)

This is an error on my part, the keyfile works just fine, It was a conflict with my system and KinCon NOTHING to do with the xadmaster keyfile, sorry for misleading info.

the version for the Amiga is
unrar 3.80 Copyright (c) 1993-2008 Alexander Roshal

other versions are obsolete they can't uncompress new rar files created by winrar

I confirm what was said by Sandro version UnRAR 3.80 unpack RAR compression modern, XADunfile It is faster, I use both DOpus 4.

To unpack RAR archives, it may be of interest, with DOpus 4 in addition to convenient Buttons, you can also use Click-m-Click and LBM Double Click (preview), attaching video showing the use of WinRAR is XADunfile of Dopus4.
