Extra animations on certain games

Hi, I remember quite well that on A1200, games such as Monkey Island 1 and others, had extra animations.

I'm using a real A600 with 2MB Chip Ram and 8MB Fast Ram, as well as I'm testing various configs on WinUAE just for testing purposes.

Results: a stock A1200 (no fast ram) can display such extra animations like clouds in the MI1 intro, but an A600 with specs as above and either 2/4/8 MB Fast Ram cannot.

Is it a 68020 requirement thing and a 68000 CPU does not have enough horsepower? Else? Or any way to achieve that with a 68000?

Apparently from this thread it will work with 2mb Chip but not if you have too much fast ram? https://www.lemonamiga.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14559

How are you running the game?

Yep, I saw that thread.
So far I've tried 2/4/8 MB Fast Ram with an A600 and 2Mb Chip ram, with no success, but I've tried from adf files on WinUAE.
I'll give it a try with WHD, but should this have any impact?

Just tried it and it seems like it's the CPU that matters. Running it on a A500 quickstart with a 68020 gives you clouds, running it on a A500 quickstart with 2 MB chip not. (Using IPFs)

Didn't know about this feature I've added a note to Monkey Island on HOL. Please let me know which other games have extended animations on better machines

I have just tested the Whdload version on my A600 although I do have 2mb chip and an 020 Furia accelerator and I have the cloud animation. Never new about the differences to be honest.

Could you try it with the Furia disabled? If it's not too much hassle

It is strange because the time of release there was hardly any 68020.

It can be disabled unfortunately so you have to open up the machine and then remove it completely. I don't think I will have enough memory to run the game if I do that as its Whdload.

Yeah. I guess it's for A3000 users, but it's weird that Lucasfilm added that feature.

Furia comes with a 68020, that's cheating

But yeah, the point is to understand if that's a matter of CPU or a matter of available RAM.

Anyways, I've tried with WHD as well, A600 2Mb Chip RAM + 2/4/8 MB fast ram, same results

So, I would assume that this depends on the CPU itself rather than on the overall available ram, wouldn't you guys agree?

P.S.
Nothing to do with that, but I didn't quite remember that MI1 would run that slow in the Scumm Bar, on an A600

wow, nice to know that MI1 add some more animation with 68020. There some other games that during loading it suggest to use 68020, but for Monkey Island 1 is a surprise because it is not reported.

Looks like a case of a forward-thinking developer leaving a feature enabled because it worked on their development system (probably an A2000 with an A2620?) and that while it didn’t work on the current unexpanded models, it would magically work in newer Amigas - as the Amiga platform would most certainly include at least a 020 in newer models.

IIRC this also happened on some DOS PC games but I can’t pinpoint any specific examples right now.

The Amiga 3000 with a 68030 was released a year before the game came out on Amiga, so I would assume that they had one available when they developed the Amiga version. I'm trying to ask Brad Taylor if he knows more about it.

Strange!

I've tried a few different configurations on my MiST (so they may not correlate 100% with true hardware), and providing I have at least 512KB of Chip RAM and *some* Fast RAM (the smallest amount I can configure is 2MB) then I get the clouds, regardless of whether the processor is set to 68000 or 68020.

2MB of Chip alone doesn't give me clouds, even if configured as a A1200 (68020), and any amount of Slow RAM along with Chip also results in no clouds.

i tried with Winuae (hardisk version). It is not the processor, but the kickstart version
A500, Workbench 1.3, 512k Chip RAM, 1BM Slow Fast + 68020 cpu + kick 1.3: It load clouds animation.
A500, Workbench 1.3, 512k Chip RAM, 1MB Slow Fast + 68000 cpu + kick 1.3: no clouds animation.
A500, Workbench 1.3, 512k Chip RAM, 1MB Slow Fast + 68000 cpu + Kick 2.04: it load clouds animation
