Hard drive problem!!!

Hi,

I had installed workbench not in a hdf file but I had copied the file in a pc directory.
I had configured Fs-UAE and I choose the pc directory in a hard drive tab.
When I boot that don't work do you know why?

I have an another problem. I found an old version of amikit 8(its a free version).
I uncompressed the file in my pc directory. I created a hfd file of 4go.
I see all the file in the pc directory but not the files xx.info. Do you know why?

Thanks a lot

I found 2go is the max for a bootable hdf. I continue to fix my problem.
Have a nice day

Hi AmigaFan67

The early Amiga's (A1000, A2000, A500, A500+) were 16-bit architecture machines

The later model Amiga's (A1200, A4000, CD-32) were 32-bit architecture machines

As a result, the Amiga's use 32-bit addressing, so that the maximum
HD that they can use is 4 GB in size, and the largest bootable partiton is 2 GB

Most people will suggest that you use between a 512 MB - 2 GB partiton for a boot partition.

The .info files are workbench icons. So it is kinda normal you don't see them as ordinary files.
If you are able to open a cli window and use a command line to list files, you will see the .info there.

WTF?

16bit would result in 64kB memory and file size.

Stock A1200 adresses 16 MB only, due to same 24bit adress bus as MC68000.

HD partition and hdfile size depend on ROM and driver version!

@freakofnature

The A1000 / A500 / A500+ / A600 / ect etc Used the MK68000 CPU
This was "classified" as a 16-bit CPU / architecture

Quote:
The Motorola 68000 is sometimes called 16-bit because of the way it handles basic arithmetic. The instruction set was based on 32-bit numbers and the internal registers were 32 bits wide, so by common definitions, the 68000 is a 32-bit design. Internally, 32-bit arithmetic is performed using two 16-bit operations, and this leads to some descriptions of the system as 16-bit, or "16/32".

Quote:
the Motorola 68000 family (the first two models of which had 24-bit addressing),
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/32-bit_computing

The A1200 & A4000 were 32-bit machines, and can address 2^32 = 4GB blocks of memory

This is why there is a limit of (approx) 4G HD partitons on the early Amiga computers

@noob-tech-ninja

again:

Partition size is unrelated to 16 bit architecture. No matter how often you cite wikipedia entries.
A500 has 16 bit data bus. That's not a delimiter. Same size as early SCSI and other peripheral busses.

According to your analogy, with an A500 no one ever would be able to run programs larger 64kb or use more memory, as thats the limit of 16 bit.
You wouldn't be able to use floppy disks with 880kb size, if 16 bit matters.

A1200 came with 60EC020, that cannot address 4 GB of memory (24 bit address bus). Again, this processors 16 MB address space is unrelated to partition size. File size is unaffected too.

It all depends on rom (kickrom, hd-controller) and driver.

In 1990 nobody took care of any 32 bit related boundary, so they didn't build roms and drivers future-proof. It's a software thing, not hardware (except for really old hard disk controllers and standards, like Shugart bus).
