A plain old stock Atari ST I could be interested in seeing what it can do but not an AtariSTAmigaEmulator which arrived four years late.

I don't see how. It came four years after the A1000. That's a long time to play catch up.
People talking about adding amounts of RAM to the ASTE that could cost the same as a brand new car in those days is not much to brag about. |

Maybe after that one, he will attempt porting Quake on Atari 2600.
Anyway, on the subject... Metal Slug on A500, is indeed madman task. The closest I could think of, is using Ruff'n'Tumble engine, and avoid all these massive explosions, and destruction of wooden houses... But yeah.. with Ruff'n'Tumble engine, it might look pretty cool, even when heavy compromises from original game is done. |

I think it's a shame that projects like this start off, probably well intended but wither on the vine before being realised.
My own sense in this sphere is that so many games would be great to convert to a plain unexpanded Amiga 500, just like they would have been back in the day. Yes, those games wouldn't be as good as if a later spec was used but to my mind, the real retro thrill of it all is to apply the limitations of that which was imposed in that golden era and just knuckle down and deal with it. |

It clearly was an attempt to level the playing field with the Amiga though and I don't think there's one thing it does as well, let alone better. Not anything that matters in a real world sense anyway. |

There's no such thing as Ruff N Tumble engine. There are probably very specific hacks / game designed around amiga limitations. Doing something too ambitious for ECS, specially a port, is very difficult to complete. You can display pics, show title screens, a few animations, but the whole game, at a decent frame rate? ask Tiertex. |

What I mean is code that is running the game.
For me, it's one of the best looking platformer/shooter on OCS. It even somewhat resemble cartoony graphics of the Metal Slug (similar style). So, in theory, if some experienced OCS coder could get his hand source code of Ruff'n'Tumble, change graphics, levels, and have tons of patience and passion to do it, I assume some interesting Metal Slug port could be done for OCS (with 1MB, or more Ram). Sure, it would be full of compromises.. you can't have level of destructions, colors, of the real Metal Slug, and there would be no parallax..etc... Just my (non coder) humble opinion. |

Interesting to see this old thread brought back from the dead.

In the case of Metal Slug, if a company like Ocean had let's say, in an alternate universe, taken the job on. Something both playable and broadly recognizable as Metal Slug could certainly be made by them. Within the limitations of even 512kb Chip RAM and OCS only. How much fun it would actually be to play, is an open question, I guess. I still think an A1200 with a speedy CPU and a decent amount of Fast RAM could do the game reasonable justice, though. B |

there was this RTG one
https://aminet.net/package/game/actio/MiniSlug Requirements: 040+ CPU. PeterK's icon library for icons. It needs about 18 MB of RAM and ~15MB HD free space. Increase stack to at least 100000 in case staring problems. Try different AHI modes if still starting problems occurs. RTG set to 16 bit. (32bit mode displays wrong colors) |

Recent experiments with HAM by Remz, and Platon show what could possibly be done. And the game colour reduces well, as it features lots of military greys and browns.
