A2000/A2091 Tinkering - CD-ROM/HDD

I got a rev 6.2 A2000HD a few weeks ago and have been sorting minor battery leakage, giving it a general tidy up etc. I wanted to replace the original (still working) 40MB HDD with something a bit bigger and newer and fancied trying to get a CD-ROM working in it, and being put off by current eBay prices for this sort of thing I took a punt on an old Power Mac 7200 from eBay for £50. It contained an Apple-branded 1GB SCSI hard disk and 4x SCSI CD-ROM.

My A2091 has version 5.92 ROMs which I understood have problems with hard drives over 1GB and generally with removable drives, so I wasn't too confident - to my surprise the HDD (Conner CFP1080S) works great and gets 1.2 Sysinfo MB/sec which is about double the original drive:

I had zero confidence in getting the CD-ROM working (Apple CD 600i, a Sony drive) but that worked too (I used a Saturn game as I am a bit light on data CDs):

The only issue I saw with this setup was that the CD-ROM doesn't recognise a disk change until the Amiga is rebooted, which I think is fixed in a later A2091 ROM.

TL;DR: If you are after old SCSI hardware have a look for early-mid 90s Macs which go for peanuts and can contain useful things.

I didn't know that revision of 2091 ROMs would even work with Kickstart 2+ (I thought 6.x was needed), so that's good info, too.

And you have excellent taste in Saturn games.

Try this. From a shell enter:
Code:
diskchange cd0:
