Amiga ethernet cards still compatible with Windows?

Sort of an Amiga question, but not entirely, however VERY Amiga-related:

I want to get my A2000 online, but due to my modem type (wireless, uses mobile phone system), it can't be directly connected.

This means that I must connect via a network with my PC, or maybe my Mac at a stretch.

There seem to be quite a few Zorro II cards out there without an RJ45 connector, just BNC.

If I where to purchase such a card, plus an old PC network card with BNC connector...would XP or Vista even be able to support such an ancient connection method/hardware configuration?

Couldnt you just connect the amiga to a router, hub or switch connected to the rest of the network? Some amiga network cards have an AUI connector which can be converted to rj45 with a cheap transceiver.

Easier to get an Ethernet transceiver like http://cgi.ebay.com/CentreCom-AT-210...QQcmdZViewItem. I use an old Cabletron tranceiver on my A2065.

Sorry, was thinking 10base5 (AUI/thicknet), not 10base2 (coax/thin). I actually use an AUI<->10baseT. But, 10base2 to 10baseT/twisted pair does exist.

Nope, I'm using wireless broadband.
It's just a small USB device which connects to the internet via the mobile phone network.
There are no other connectors on the modem aside from the USB connector that goes into the PC.

I have one of those Wireless Modems, i have found it to be almost useless!!

as long as your amiga is runnign TCP/IP over the ethernet network, you shouldn't have any problems? just enable ICS for the Wireless, set the amiga Default Gateway to the PC IP address. (easy??? )

worse case you could get a thylacine card and use the serlion usb stack. with this use one of them 3com usb to network dongles... i think Chain did this..

Sounds great my friend, but for one problem, the PC is brand new...so no ISA slots

I can only assume that the card you mention is a PC one, as I thought the A2000's ISA slots are inactive?

You can buy routers which work on the 3G network. Then you can plug any computers which need to connect up to the internet to that router.

Oooooo, that sounds pretty good!

So, I just take the SIM card out of my current modem & stick it in said router?

But there are as many Z2 cards out there *with* an RJ45 connector. So why don't you just buy one of those. Then you don't need to bother with BNC.

Dont know the details fingers but I know you can buy them. I would never bother with 3G internet unless I was mega rich or it was the only choice.

The modem dongle plugs straight into the router. NetComm, Draytek and Billion all make routers that will work with 3G, most of them come with ethernet jacks as well as wifi, cost is about 200 notes.

P.S. Thomas is right.

Good news, I'll look into that!

The ones without RJ45 are more within my price range...the one you've listed above will probably go for many hundreds

You could always try to set up a SLIP connection with your PC via serial port and enable ICS (internet connection sharing). It effectively makes the PC pretend to be a serial modem.

The only thing it will cost is time, but you will be limited to the maximum baud rate of the Amiga serial port.

start at about $4.95 p/m (unkown download) to around $40 p/m for around 5 GB! So not that expesive!

I got mine cause it was only option moving around alot at the time!
they are extremly useless as an everyday connection AFAIC!!!

for unknown reason thylacine didnt work in any of my A2000 (tried 3 cards i two miggys)
- its very slow on A3000/040 system
- usable for browsing/email at least on A4000/060

remember theres no DMA used, just polling, and its really cpu intensive

+ poseidon stack isnt needed, supplied sirion works fine for pegasus ethernet devices

I just purchased one of those 3G routers.

Now the search begins for an AFFORDABLE & suitable Amiga ethernet card!

The one in Quebec? Yeah, I saw it too.

So if I get an adaptor, I can then use this card with my new RJ45 router?

With the transceiver like shown above...it is simply a cable adaptor (& maybe signal amplifier)?
