Advantages of KS3.1

Now that I finally have my A1200 running properly with CF and 8Mb Fast RAM - are there any advantages to upgrading to KS3.1? (Currently on 3.0 ROMs)

Would it be sufficient to softkick 3.1 - or can anyone burn some ROMs for me? (I own AmigaForever 2008 so legally have a copy anyway) How would I go about softkicking - what software do I need?

Also - WHDLoad seems to not like the 3.1 A1200 ROM from Cloanto - some games refuse to run with an "invalid kickstart image" message - eg Frontier. Would upgrading my ROM's cure this? (Although I could simply dump them if I change the chips!)

Are there any disadvantages to either method?

I have A1200 with 3.0 ROMs and now I changed my workbench from 3.0 to 3.1. The only difference I can see is that icon-border-removing utilities don't work properly now

nice to see that motherboard is getting some use rabbit

KS3.1 would let you run any of the workbenches 3.5 and 3.9
and be most compatable with some utils or tools that need it

if you get someone to make you a rom at least make sure they upgrade the scsi.device
as for utilities to soft kick an ks3.1 search aminet for soft and kick and I`m sure you will find something, relokick rings bells in my head but haven`t softkicked an amiga in over 15 years

as for WHDLoad I think Cloanto roms are encrypted so if all you did is just copy the rom that might explain why it did`t work

Hehe - thanks cosmic.. The boards working beautifully although I have issues with loading games from floppy disk (I think it is my drive at fault though)

I'm aware that the Cloanto roms are encrypted but all the others work so long as the rom.key file is in the kickstarts folder with them!

Is the only advantage to KS3.1 that I can run WB3.5 and 3.9? How slow/fast would they run on an 020?

How much fast RAM you got? More than 6Mbytes and you'll probably be all right.

ks3.1 is mainly patching a few bugs within 3.0 roms and introduce some functions such writechunkypixels i think...there are some software patches you can add to your s:startup-sequence that can process these fixes (and more..) without the need to upgrade the rom...the best i know is systempatch (check the last version available... it includes a great patch to writechunkypixels function to optimize it and this way makes games like day of the tentacle totally playable on a vanilla 1200 with fastram!! also it helped to solve some strange issues i had with ide cf 4gb with some old jst installs freezing...don't worry guys i checked for maxtransfer but this was not the issue...)

Ive been running OS3.5 on my A1200 3.0 roms for a little while now and it seems fine amidock from 3.9 is working fine.the only thing ive noticed is the Icon editor from 3.5 doesnt work on 3.0 roms.

The most useful improvement is probably the delayed boot of the Kickstart. So some newer IDE hdds (with a slow spin-up) are mounted properly.

Isn't everyone on KS3.9 by now?

Either home-made EPROMs or using a flash device such as Kickflash, Deneb, Algor Pro or eZflash.

All the tools are out there. It adds new scsi.device so you can boot from CD-ROM, no reboots due to ROM updates. If you have an A1200 you can (reportedly) include the CF driver and boot from CF cards in the PCMCIA slot.
