Removing RF Modulator (!?)

I need some extra space in order to free my A1200 from it's extra cables. What I was thinking (hoping) was that I could remove the RF modulator, and move my VGA connector (from my internal SD/FF) into it's place (the normal expansion plate has a Blizzard SCSI). Anyone ever done this? Will the computer work if the modulator is missing? I looked at the traces and it looks like only 3-4 connections into the modulator, but I'm not sure if there are any hardware checks for this piece.

You mean the internal modulator. You're not using an A520 right?

without schematics there's no way to be absolutely sure, but I do strongly doubt that removing the RF modulator will affect the RGB video out in any way OR harm your computer (unless of course you screw up hard while removing it) aside from taking away your tv-out. its very likely that the rf modulator just samples the RGB/audio and isn't actually needed for operation of the afore-mentioned items.

But perhaps the Amiga wouldn't run if there's something missing in its PCB.

Call me an idealist but I'm against butchering of Amigas in the name of customization. If it's working, I'd let it remain so (and don't read my PAL->NTSC thread , I'll go for a software solution on this one.) It's an unsupported machine, no one may predict or restore your loss.

Ok I have done what you want to do! the amiga I hacked up still functions the same as it did before! I went one step further and still used the RF modulator with an extension lead I made up! the picture wasnt very good but then I dont use the RF output!

Great, then I'll try it. I assume the composite out still functions correctly also?

As for butchering, the Amiga 1200 is not a rare computer. You can still find them new for as low as 90 euro, and used for much cheaper. I think that towering is more of a butchering, and takes away from the original idea of the 1200. If you want expansion get an A4000. I myself like the small form factor of the 1200 and wouldn't change it's outward appearance for anything. (And, I have an A3000 still if I need to run Z3 cards...)

But don't you think it will hurt the Amiga? Have you asked her about the removing of one of her vital components?

I asked her. She said it was like the appendix and that it is a part that isn't needed. I've never used the RF ability on the A1200, and never will.

And, it's more of a cosmetic surgury than a real butchering.

I think that towering is more of a butchering, and takes away from the original idea of the 1200.

A towered 12oo can be reverted to original form at anytime, Towering is better than cutting the metal shielding to make a hd fit, or to fry it by putting a 040 in it's desktop case.

If you want expansion get an A4000

An A4000 is WAY too expensive than an 12oo and basically has no advantages if you won't use the zorro slots. Expansions are expensive as well.

Why do you need to cut the heat shield for a HD? Mine is fully intact with an 8G HD.

I don't need that now but My first A12oo was in that shape thanks to previous owner. I'm speaking of an 3.5" drive
