S.T.U.N. Runner, how could this be SOOOOOO bad????

If you're a fan of the original arcade version and was looking forward to playing it on your Amiga back in the day then no doubt tears were flowing

I give you S.T.U.N. Runner shit game time video review, I hope you enjoy it and would love to hear your thoughts of this utter dire conversion

Some guy speeded it up for the WHDLoad version.

Its at least playable on that.

Yeah but we still cannot allow the programmers to get away with not taking a trip down the toilet tube because it can be speeded up with trickery,...can we?! NOPE!

It's an ST port, like all the domark games. No effort, lazy ass

Prime Mover wasn't 3D

There are good Domark games. Not a lot I can remember now But some arcade conversions were okay. For me Domark is almost on par with US gold...

Good ones: Super Space Invaders, Escape from the planet of robot monsters, Badlands for instance

The thing is, most of STUN Runner could have been cheated on Amiga and probably ST and it would have played quite fast.

Quite why they went down the proper vector route when the arcade machine was pretty damned powerful is a mystery

even if simple 3D, 68000 has always had bad performance in games like that, but maybe this one has very slow 3D routines.

Mr Friederich made the very good port of Star Wars but did suck on Hard Drivin and here i think some of the routines are the same beside being an ST port and having an EGA palette

[EDIT] i did look around and seem an almost 1:1 port of the PC version; have the feeling the graphics and code was first done on PC using C then ported almost 1:1 to Amiga and ST to save time - and that means vectors in 16 color mode and not 8 like usually Amiga and ST do [usually much slower]

Most Domark games have the St palette bug, are slow, awful to play with.

Super Space Invaders graphics looks like ST graphics, not amiga.

Escape from Planet is OK.

Stunn Runner Arcade use a DSP 32010. ok, that's complicated, but honestly, starting a game from the ST will never bring the game right on the Amiga.

But so many others are awful......

Ugh... this game gives me a head ache just by looking at it. Definitely a proper shit-time game.

£25 actually or £8 on re-release

Just had a go of the Whdload version = Too Fast (040 emulated)
and crashed with a Line 1111 emulator exception.

I think in the tunnel scenes the FPS could be improved quite a bit if only areas with coordinates made up of the previous screen and the current screen were redrawn/updated. This would correspond to the areas that may have changed. Obviously this would need some additional CPU complexity but it should pay off on the filling time (always hard to predict for plain 68000 without actually trying it). The primary tunnel colours should be set in the same single bitplane and only the additional objects and the tunnel floor should need extra bitplanes. I wouldn't consider any of this cheating.

Could have been a seriously impressive game if they had gone done a Stardust 3D style approach.

Stardust is just a prerendered animation in a straight tunnel. How would this work with a game like this?

I was just going to say that I don't remember it being that slow but then I realised I have only played it on Whdload which has clearly been sped up quite a bit.
