It's the other way round - Psyclapse came from Psygnosis (it was a label/team which did the more arcade style games for a while). Psygnosis has another origin.

Straying a bit from the topic here, but still slightly On Topic: I have always pronounced it 'syg-no-sis', but have heard others pronounce it 'sig-no-sis'. Who can confirm who is right?

sy(g) rhymes with fly, sig rhymes with pig

I think it should be pronounced like 'psychology'. That is 'sigh'-'gnosis'.

Like you pronounce it, Twistin'.

Why didn't anyone ever answer these?

1: Light Circle
2: Psygnosis is an artificial word with no meaning
3: Automated Simulations
4: Discovery Software International

Correct on all but number 2...

In Greek:

psy = mind
gnosis = to know

Psygnosis = "to know the mind" or "knowledge of the mind"?

Psygnosis is pronounced Sigg-no-siss. I worked there for over 7 years. I always pronounced it Sigh-gnow-siss before that. My mum still pronounces it like that.

Aha, another industry man!

Quick, give us some history lessons (we're all dying here for stories from the industry at the time).

Any funny stories about Psygnosis Amiga games and their development? Were there any unreleased Psygnosis Amiga games which weren't announced to the community?

Do you have any info on the 1992 Psygnosis re-release of Dungeon Master? Did Psygnosis update the game to v3.6 or was it FTL or some other company?

Not so much funny as soul-destroying. There are many Psygnosis staff stories rather than development stories. How about "We don't want to insult you by giving you a small bonus for all your overtime, so we're not going to give you one at all.". Classic Psygnosis management. During the height of the Amiga period, when we were all in the same building, everything was great though. We all had a right laugh, went out on company trips etc. On my first day of work, the whole company went bowling in the afternoon (paid for of course). Then I got put on Microcosm and it all went downhill from there.

Brutal Sports Football was nearly a Psygnosis game, as was some game by Core design (can't remember the name now; it had this top-down view bouncing ball thing). For the Core game, we expected to take it on, so one of our guys did loads of design work. Then they pissed off to another publisher and took all our designs!

Some religious group in one of the US southern states wrote a letter to us saying that we were all devil worshippers and are doomed to rot in hell because we had hell levels with 666 in them in Lemmings.

In the credits to Nitro, graphics are credited to 'Neil "JJ" Thompson". Jim Bowers did all of the graphic intros up to that point (Obliterator, for example) and Neil was the new guy. JJ stood for "Jim Junior", and Neil HATED being called that. Neil was a body-builder so that name died a death pretty quickly. Jim works in film now - he is the best 3D artist I've ever worked with.

Christmas parties were fantastic. My first one was a fancy hat party. Can't remember what my hat was. It was in the Adelphi hotel in Liverpool. Everyone got hammered. There was a fire alarm and everyone had to go outside. Somebody decided to start a hokey-cokey and I got trapped in the middle of the circle. Every time it came round to "Ooooh the hokey-cokey" every bastard ran up in unison and tipped beer over my head (along with the odd kick and punch). All of the die ran out of my hat and ran all down my shirt, completely ruining it. We also had drunk pass-the-parcel - the whole company was about 50 people at that point, and we all sat on the dance floor in a huge circle. Can't remember what the prizes were though.

Not really. Only the platform game Indigo that I can think of. All the other stuff was just evaluations that never got taken on.

As far as I remember, Psygnosis did nothing at all to it. It was just a publishing deal.
