A500 Video/Boot problem.

Okay, I'll try to write down the things I think isn't working, then someone can correct me on things which I probably have no idea of what I'm talking about

First, I can't get any video, I believe my RGB monitor is (at least) to some degree broken, it starts and seem to work just fine, except for the presence of a black void and a noice which highly resembles loud tinitus.
From what I can recall it has repeatetly died/gone black for a (few) moments in the past/time before it went completely black.
Some time ago (1-2 years) I tried hooking it up to a standard TV and was somehow able to get the familiar white screen with a Kickstart floppy sign, I didn't get much further beyond that point.

And as for the A500 itself, I hardly remember much, it seems to load my KS just fine before doing a complete halt. I'll just have to check again later.

And now I'll wait for someone to tell me what to check/do in order to get more info on the source of my problem. Though I doubt I'll be able to do anything which requires a monitor/video signal.

If the RGB monitor is one of those philips jobbies (1084 or friends), it will probably have cracked solder joints at the flyback transformer.

A loud whine may also come from a broken power supply in the 1084.

Yup, it's a 1084. So I guess there's not much I can do about the monitor then.

So what about the computer itself? Are there any tests I can do without a monitor, just so I can see if it's broken or not?

1084 making a "whine" is normal. If you really want to repair the monitor I recommend looking for bad solder joints at the transformer as Jope suggested, but make sure the monitor hasn't been used for a few days so that the current dissipates. However why don't you use the machine on TV via RGB SCART? Much nicer (and larger) picture

Power up, the internal drive should start clicking. Does it?

- yes, stick in a known bootable disk (wb1.3?) and see if it starts booting
- no, something is wrong with the computer

Lets see.
Clicking, yes.
And it seems to boot just fine using WB 1.2/2.0/2.05. And then?

I tried using a TV, it reacts when I turn on the Amiga but it still remains black.

But I'm certain I might be doing something wrong =/

Silly question, are you using an A520 modulator? If so, is it set to the correct TV standard, e.g. PAL-G. PAL-I?

If I recall correctly, if the wrong one is set on the modulator then the TV won't tune into the Amiga.

And the silly answer is, no I'm not. I've never taken the time to get one.
And when you're done laughing, feel free to laugh some more.

I'd laugh more if you actually took the time to track down an A520. Unless one falls into your lap from the sky, it's better to use RGB SCART or an RGB monitor.

Better to use one of those even if A520 does fall into your lap from the sky

Obviously something is wrong with this amiga luma port, hopefully the video on the RGB port is still working.
