I don't have the game, and anyway it was on DJ Mike's WIP list...

As for version checks:

Code:
lea $xxxxx,a0
move.l #$2c00,d0
move.l _resload(pc),a2
jsr resload_CRC16(a2)

cmp.w #$1234,d0
bne _wrongver
Standard code in most of my slaves, prevents crashes with unsupported versions or ones with corrupt files. And just remember I'm not the one getting coredumps posted in here about my installs!

Would you please continue the petty bickering? I find it most intriguing.

Yes Mr. Supertapper, you are the best coder in the world and your installs all work perfectly. Happy now? Thought so! And if you are so confident about your abilities, how about having a compo? Task: Fix a game WITHOUT any help of WHDLoad, quit back to dos etc. have of course to be added. The fastest of us wins. Tell me if you accept this challenge, prove that you are oh so great!

Edit: to make it a bit more interesting, a crack/fixtro has to be coded too. People on EAB will judge the intros as well. After all, you shouldn't have any problems doing all that, should you? Anyway, that's my offer. Meanwhile I continue to work on some requested installs...

Guys, let's get back on topic. I think on EAB is a section for Coders and please, have your competition there. Let's concentrate on slave for Embryo and maybe others on which StingRay probably will take look.

I don't see the point of this. WHDLoad has had about 10 years of development, features, debugging and tools made for it. The boring parts of making a HD install are already handled, what possible reason would you have for wanting to ditch the WHDLoad shell? Whatever you or I came up with, it wouldn't be as fast, clean, small or as stable as WHDLoad. So I think this is a pointless task.

In the early days, I did release about 10-20 games before switching to WHDLoad. Some people probably still have them, I have proven I can do them, but it's pointless when WHDLoad does everything so well.

That's just time I don't have I'm afraid. I would rather spend time patching games (or even writing one from scratch) than making cracktros. There are enough cracktros out there already, it would just be copying nice effects from other demos which again seems a waste of time.

I'm sure people on here would be more impressed if you made a game (even with ripped gfx from MAME) than yet another cracktro...

Incidentally I have no doubt you would be able to do a better cracktro than me - since I have never bothered to make one! However I'm sure I know a thing or two about patching!

It is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you will win hundred times in hundred battles. If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you win one and lose the next. If you do not know yourself or your enemy, you will always lose.

I'll let you figure out where that quote comes from. Codetapper did at least a few decent HD fixes for games with quit back to WB before he became a WHD patcher. Only Galahad, NOMAD, Jeff Fabre (JOTD), Abaddon (Keith Krellwitz) and perhaps one or two others had produced good quality HD fixes before him. While most patchers had trouble fixing games for anything beyond 020/030, these guys often were doing the job for CPUs up to 060 and achieving clean quits back to WB. The last part was what really set the men from the boys IMHO, because it really wasn't the done thing back in the 90s when the patching tools available were relatively primitive. Interestingly, Galahad, Jeff and Keith (now retired) became WHD patchers. I'm sure NOMAD would have too had he not left the scene long before WHD was just an idea burning in Bert's mind.

before jst/whd, it was rare to see a HD patch for an original game as they always seemed targeted to the cracked dos (adf) versions of the games. was quite annoying as i didnt have a way of getting the cracked stuff back then. was buying pd disks for the patches only to find they were no good to me

WARNING: it is totally untested (but I think it should work). Only the prefs won't work as these require separate patching. Can you test the slave with your version, Mailman? I'm specially interested if all the trainers etc. still work. Thanks.
The slave is looking for the game in some weird path (work:games/embryo2/) instead of data/
