Hi chaps,
Sadly I've had precious little time for 'hanging out' in a while...
...still I've not been wholly inactive:

-The Qube RiscOS Server's website has had a few updates. Maybe those interested in 32bit Acorn stuff would like to have a nose about.

-Classic RiscOS in particular has undergone a major update. Now up to version 2 - beta, of course...
...Um, while IMO it's become a whole lot more spiffy and yet now has a very much reduced system footprint the archive has grown to 150mb! If the kind souls who mirrored v1 would consider mirroring v2 I'd be most grateful.

Yes, Classic RiscOS will now comfortably run on real Arc's without the need for serious upgrades.

Here's some thumbnails:

-Example Boot Screens-
..

-Example Desktops-
..

Left to Right - 'Light', 'Standard', and 'Full' versions

Light: For p*ss poor Arc's
Standard: For good Arc's & general use
Full: Emulation or heavily upgraded machines.

Of course Classic RiscOS is for 'classic' Arc's with OS 3.1 ROMs, but it comes packaged with the excellent Arculator (thanks Tom) so it will run right out of the box on a 'doze machine.
A lot of the above is transferable to later machines (3.5+) but you'd need to cherry-pick parts by hand.

Have fun and Happy New Year!

Wow! Thanks, Charlie, you have been busy!

That looks great!

I'll have to try that out soon.

I'm a bit too busy ATM, but in a couple of weeks or so I should have more time to have a look. (BTW, still haven't got a mouse for my A3000, but I have an idea...)

Happy New Year to you too!

Great update, Charlie. I will try v2.0 as soon as mirrors are available.

The latest version of the Cube RISC website is downgraded from the preivious version.

There seems to be no Lemmings games anymore on there for one.

Really..?
Previous versions are still available but, honestly, the latest version is a big step up over version 1...
-Faster
-More functionality
-Lower memory foot-print
-Easier to customise.

Lemmings, Oh No! More Lemmings, and Lemmings II The Tribes are still available on the public server. Also all present and correct in the Classic RiscOS distro - was playing them earlier today.

Um, one or two games have gone from the public view by request of copy-right holder(s). It seems RiscOS-types can be much keener to defend 20+ year old software than is the case for other retro-platforms...

-Update, Update, Update-
Classic RiscOS is now properly up to version 2 - remaining bugs I'm aware of squashed and yet more features / included apps.
As a result the archive has now grown to 151mb despite changing the format to .rar...
...There's now a 'Light' version that weighs in at only 14mb - It's the system install only, stripped of all the additional software, then split onto floppy-friendly chunks for easier install to a real machine.

Sorry, no v2b -> v2.0 updater at the mo'. I've been very short of spare time over the last few months...
...one could use the Light version to update previous versions by hand (minus added software).
Please note: Tom's excellent Arculator isn't included with the Light version.

I hope you all like.

-Update, Update, Update-

More stuff on the web-site:
-Projects Page...
-Systems Page...
-New BB members...

-New FTP Server members (the important bit)...

...and more on the way.

There's also a new version of:

Still v2 but this time in ArcStick Edition - It's designed to go onto a USB stick (min 256mb) and will auto-run on insertion assuming you're running 'doze with Auto-Load enabled.
-Nice for retroness on a keyring...
...Shove the ArcStick into your work computer when you're bored and in moments you have Classic RiscOS goodness.
-It's the full Classic RiscOS setup - I bet nobody's bothered to delve the depths of the 'standard' set up.
-It runs Faaaast.
-Yet more games and emulators installed.
-Smaller archive too!

-Oh, and it's a bit experimental.

Depending on interest (and my limited time these days) I may look into an auto-booting version (using ReactOS) in case anyone wants to 'do an Amithlon' on their PC.

How's that?

Now, the downside:
The server went down some time last night, the PSU-brick had given up!

It's now fully up in a somewhat de-constructed form with a PC-PSU plugged into the motherboard but @ some point it will have to go down again for repairs...
...warning of impending maintenance will appear on the main site page. Also the above Classic RiscOS logo will go off-line when the server is.

Thanks for another update, Charlie!

It's appreciated all the more because we know you've been very busy lately.

Wow! Thanks for compiling that!

I suppose it could autostart from any device - even a CD!

That would be a nice option. Certainly something to think about.

Well, at least it didn't take anything else out when it failed!

And the embedded Qube RiscOS Server status indicator logo is a nice touch, too.

Hello chaps - long time no see... Busy, busy

Anyway:
Thanks for the kind words prowler and Methanoid - sorry for the world's slowest reply.

v2.6
...is now out!

>Here<
Also via the FTP

Didn't OS 3.1 come out in 1992? Yep, but I have tweaked it just a little bit.
(Boggo 3.1)
Do you like the Virtual CD-ROM for a-reading .iso images?

Lots more stuff, more polish, better instructions, even easier to configure - also about 180Mb! Lite & ArcStick versions out in a bit.

I'd like to get the main archive down to about 120Mb if I can - feedback is always welcome, but I would especially like to hear what can be ditched...

Many thanks to Tom Walker for his excellent Arculator emulator. Classic RiscOS will of course run on any 'classic system' with OS 3.0-3.19 and a hard drive...
...Arculator, VA5000, and real hardware.

All the best.

I'm uploading the ClassicRiscOS 2.6 archive to the EAB File Server in the Misc/Various/Acorn ClassicRiscOS folder for faster downloads.

Edit: Done!

Thank you TCD!

...would now be a good time to mention that there's an update in the pipeline already?

Quick Teaser

Lots of new bits 'n bobs

I'll do an update package (2.6-2.81) as well as a full release when it's ready to save further uploading effort.

I really appreciate all the kind comments and help with mirroring CROS on the EAB FTP server - THANK YOU!

That looks great, Charlie! Thanks for all your effort!

Thank YOU, Charlie! RiscOS is not easy for the inexperienced user to set up properly, so your effort is all the more appreciated for that.

BTW, I would gladly upload all your releases to the EAB Server if it's okay with you.
