This thread is an obituary, not an excuse to promote your worldviews, whatever they might be. Last I checked this kind of stuff is banned on eab (thankfully).

horrified to see that Kiwi Farms is directly linked to 2 suicides according to Wikipedia.

I presume the bullying extends into real life via doxing, so there is no real escape from the internet trolls.

Ive never understood the need to post details about yourself online that you know will feed the idiots. Of course it shouldn't matter, but it's easier to just keep your head down and live your life the way you want away from all of this bullshit.

This is really sad, RIP.
Online bullying is horrible and recently with social media has become terrible. If anyone here is feeling bullied, here or in other forums i would highly recommend switching off for a week or two.

I used to care about what others thought of me/my comments and luckily was the age of internet sans social media. Today i just try and switch off, theres so much crap to deal with in real life its not worth the hassle of dealing with virtual online crap also!

I wouldn't want it to be like it was after the war but I can't ignore the fact that a backbone has almost no chance to be formed nowadays, until it is too late.
Was my thought about this as well.

Also, people need to understand that "online" isn't real life. If you feel the stuff you read in forums and on social media isn't good for you, just step away from it for a while or more permanently.

A naive question perhaps: how does this bullying on that web site work? I mean, how does it affect the victim if that person is not a member on that site? Will they swarm out and bully their victim on other "social media" platforms and organize that bullying on that kiwi website thing?

Pretty much. They also are specialised in "doxxing" which means they can find out someone's real name, address, phone number, etc and start harassing them in real life, by calling them during the middle of the night, sending SWAT at their home by feigning an hostage situation and much more.

The anxiety the people targeted by them feel is real. It's not as easy as "just delete your social accounts if you can't take it".

If you managed to disappear, they will start doing the same to your friends and family. This is what happened to Near.

It seems most people in here don't understand what went on and at what scale.

These people are relentless and won't stop at anything.

Can't say I really agree with your military/backbone thing here, bud. I fought in two wars, deployed five times, have been injured, have had to fight for my life many times, and deal with suicidal ideation every day.

I've seen this "swatting" happen with Twitch game streamers, and it really is shocking how stupid and dangerous these bullies are to not only commit criminal offences by calling out armed response units to innocent people in their own homes, but risking their lives as well.

I see my 14 y.o. step-niece gaming in the living room (Valorant, not sure of the toxicity level there) and secretly pray people do not swat her because in that someone of the family might risk to be shot at, included me and my wife -_-

But the likes of Kiwi Farms are a different "league" of bullying. From what i've read they are stalking you. Hacking private accounts, posting this stuff online, denouce you at your boss etc. This wasn't just typing some bad words online. Why else would he offer to pay over 100000 dollars to this admin, only to make it stop it.

Sure, byuu war depressive before that happend. But anyway, this can lead to tragic stuff like that.

I've met plenty of poisonous people online, I invariably block them and pay them no mind, trolls and angry people that get off on this stuff dont have a direct line for their idiocy.

Its not social media its anti-social media, and for reasons I cannot fathom, young folks just absolutely cannot stomach the possibility that they are not on it and not a part of it.

Its corrosive and feeds narcissistic personalities, to the point that even though its damaging the well being of these kids, they can't move away.

The non-binary thing is a red herring, this poor kid was dealing with problems long before this came up, and its clear the trolls that were baiting him were doing so for any reason long before the non-binary declaration.

The chances are he wasn't non-binary at all, but rather hoped the declaration would have eased the stuff he was facing.

I won't mourn twitter when it eventually dies the death it needs to, its a fucking cesspit, but for some reason, young people are worried they are missing out if they are not part of it.

Its probably this stalemate for Near that caused him to end it all, couldn't be without social media, but social media was the thing that he thought made him relevant that was doing him damage.

The fact is that his accomplishments speak for themselves, a shame then that a noisy minority were able to convince him otherwise.

He could have still made great software, and benefited humanity even more.

Thought about this Iron Maiden music:

it didn't take long for this very "community" to fold into the exact behaviour that caused this, and other people, to take such extreme and sad measures.

especially you, ExiE, you're vile and shouldn't be even allowed to say such shit, but this forum is a haven for hateful little persons like you to spew bile when the moderation hides themselves in a veil of "free speech".

the very notion of calling anyone that's sensible to being attacked, in any way, a "softie", is despicable.

and thank you for these words cloverskull, i am sorry you had to do all that to uphold the agenda of some heartless power. i guess someone like gimbal considers you a softie, that's how messed up their statements are.

i will also say that trying to judge the sensibilities of anyone that isnt your own generation is incredibly self centered and selfish. there's no possible way for you to understand what they go through, or what "online" means to them, because they have grown in a different way and perceive things differently, in teh same way your parents probably didnt understand half of what you went through growing up. Guess you didnt learn that lesson. bein like "you just go offline and forget about it" is clearly, very clearly, not a possibility for these people.

Have you even read the whole story about this? and this Kiwi Farms website? It is despicable, and blaming the victim for being "soft", is unconscionable
