Battery leakage on Amiga 500+

Hi Folks,

First post so be kind!

I've picked up what looked like a pristine Amiga 500+. Before I opened it I checked it was all working by running Workbench and Lemmings for a few hours.

Once opened I could see that the rev8a motherboard had a mildly leaking battery. I've removed it and cleaned up the motherboard and components nearby with alcohol and have moved onto checking continuity on the tracks that have some corrosion on them.

I've attached a picture of the area. In the picture the corrosion looks really bad, it doesn't look that bad in real life the picture seems to bring out the worst. Can anyone tell me where I can check continuity for the pads circled in red please?

I'll look at recapping it if this area is okay.

Excellent! Thanks - that site is really cool! I've traced those pads through the area with the corrosion and get continuity across them all. Time to put this back together until the caps arrive.

AngryInca, you are one very fortunate A500+ owner.

I recently acquired an A500+ with the seals still intact, but when I opened it up to remove the battery to prevent the inevitable damage which would soon ensue, I was far too late as evidenced by a wasteland of green residue four inches in diameter all around the corroded battery!

AngryInca, that looks a nice easy fix.
I would be tempted to not test for continuity, and simply to run trace wires along the paths.
The top one in the photo - circled red, closest to the battery - appears to run under the Gary chip so may be most time consuming
(Pin 11 of Gary IF I am reading beta.amigapcb.org rev 8a correctly!)
- the others look like two resistors and one solder pad that they run to, so should be a doddle.

Wow, that board looks almost pristine. You have a few partially (but minimally so) corroded traces that really shouldn't give you any problems. If the one nearest the single battery hole has continuity then you're all set. May I suggest, when it comes to standard electrolytic capacitors (axial & radial) recapping is hardly ever needed. If you don't see any corrosion (from the battery) at the cap's leads they're almost always OK to leave undisturbed, and I don't think your board has any of the surface mount type (which are the ones that "leak" in every sense of the word.) Congratulations on your find, I sure wish I had been that lucky with my last Amiga purchase.
