It's a two-pane FTP client. If you've used DirWork, DOpus or Norton Commander you'll feel at home. https://winscp.net/eng/index.php is legit (AFAIK).

Browsers stopped supporting ftp links. Use an ftp client. Most people seem to prefer filezilla.

For a quick file transfer you can also use Windows Explorer. Just type the URL into the address line.

To download from FTP you can use an older version of FireFox, Google, Iron "Portable", or you can use a good filemanager Amiga-style Total Commander, this filemanager unzips Lzx and other file native Amiga archives.

I hate this change dearly on principle (browsers are becoming more and more limited), but must admit that in practice it works quite well - if you link an FTP client when Firefox prompts you too.

So, install WinSCP (it's a great, completely safe program, been using it for ages) and just link it to Firefox. From then on the downloads will happen quite seamlessly.

Nothing on the internet can be trusted. You can't even trust the people that say trust me, sunshine. And what of the packages you are downloading. Nothing but nothing can be trusted. There is little need for a FTP these days given the other ways files can be transferred.

Also when you see that download button for anything its more than likely the download software is OK but the other nasty you let in thro the back door is already sifting through your history.

So ask yourself is it worth taking the risk. I stopped using IE cus the login is not encrypted and I ran into the same file failures due to various protection measures being initiated server side and local.
FTP was not designed to be safe. Just Google 'FTP is not safe'. Walk away.
