Entire NBS PD Library.

I am still hunting for a complete backup/archive of the Newport Business Supplies public domain library.

There was a hint somebody on this forum had all of it on cdr's but this was quite a long time back.

I have a bunch of original disks, but sadly no catalogue disk (was hoping I did but sadly not).

I mean, I doubt there's any "permission" thing going on here, it is a Public Domain library, not a collection of commercial titles.

Let us know if we can help somehow.

I am a pain and apologize! do you still have this file available? I missed it first time around.

Also am I right to assume those cd's are actually United Public Domain? the 4 CD set?

Thanks to the Amiga Facebook Group, I have been forwarded information about one of the original owners of NBS (Newport Business Supplies).

I will be emailing Paul as it appears there is still a shop selling second-hand games. Will contact him asap to see if there can be some movement on saving this brilliant and obscure Public Domain library from oblivion.

Also whilst I am sorting that out, has anyone got a proper working NBS Catalogue disk as I still cannot find one! I have a good bundle of these NBS disks now, but still no catalogue.

Every now and then I check this thread, Loved that label design pic
there are some disks that I’m Sure Only they had, including some of my pitiful attempts attempts at pd coding.

So far nothing

I will have a very close look at my emails again but I think they never replied!

But I am now aware that a good bunch of the NBS disks were included in the
United PD Gold 4 x CD Set. Also some of them ended up on the 17bit CD's.

I cannot be 100% sure about what is what, I know NBS had a coding system to identify disks in the entire catalogue.

Also what is present is pretty much standard, all of the obscure stuff is not! and thats is what I was trying to save to complete it all as much as possible.

The label - I have a few disks that somehow were sent out with no markings whatsoever so the label was pristine! my only issue is trying to get a decent scan of the entire thing so it can be re-printed.

I have given up with the original poster, all I really wanted was the catalogue disk! the most up to date one would be best.
Also everything associated with "Hunter.exe" the program that appears to have been used to keep track of these disks, orders etc.
I am aware hard drives possibly exist to go with this program but no evidence exists to show that it is true.

Do you have anything left at all that could be looked at/imaged? doesnt matter if its just one disk, or a few, any are better than none

EDIT: Rooting around old magazine scans! NBS were very active in the busy world of PD companies! the disk label made them stand out. I was thinking about gathering every page where an advert appeared, but it will take a while.

Next thing! The catalogue disk, the main list is part of an exe program, obviously written in something like Amos.

I want to extract the whole list in text but have not idea where to start, it does have an option to print out. But again I have had limited sucess trying to print anything let alone that from within Winuae.

You could hex-edit the exe after decrunching it and extract the text manually

EDIT: I have no clue where to start! im 100% sure everything is in the DISKCAT.exe

Just do "xfddecrunch diskcat.exe" and then hex edit it searching for the text

Thank you for having a go! I am still going to have a crack as I want to learn how to pull things apart.

Seems odd if the text files are not there? where is the program calling them from? Also just recalled the NBS.zip that I missed back along. Looks like that had the entire list

I think the disk is a hybrid DOS/Trackload so the data is loaded off certain NDOS tracks and decrunched as needed! BattleChess uses a similar approach of DOS files and 'hidden' data!

If you copy the DOS files to a bootable blank formatted disk and boot it the main diskcat program will load but won't load the 'hidden' data so just quits back to DOS!

Main problem is that the extract operation from tracks of the text goes out of my skills

It's compressed data too, so you would need to know the compression format and the offsets that load each piece of data from the diskcat program, only people familiar with Amiga coding will be able to do that though!

Someone called SundoX coded it so if anyone knows who SundoX is, maybe contacting them might help?
