Best monitors currently available new
There are so many topics on this and I have read most of them. The problem is that they mostly specify monitors that are no longer available to purchase new. Many even difficult to find second hand. This is also true of the compiled lists of monitors.
Are there any recommended monitors that are newer models available to buy today? (preferably for me available in the UK) A major plus would be one that remembers screen position of the different screen modes. I don't think I could be bothered with one that doesn't. |

I've had most luck with LG monitors that have VGA + HDMI.
But this is not me telling you to go buy a random LG. I have tried 10+ and only a few worked. Based on my testing, the more expensive LGs were less likely to do 15kHz and the cheaper ones seemed to do it more reliably. And then it's a further stretch of luck to have 4:3 aspect ratio or it remembering your screen modes.. Samsung didn't work at all. |

I have a bunch of new monitors. For my A4000 I use a Lenovo Q24i-1L
They are still available here and there, actually I even did a review going through a bunch of native Amiga + RTG screenmodes. [ Show youtube player ] |

Oh, it even states in the specs that it supports 15kHz. A bit expensive for a 1080p monitor though, if it's even avaliable. |

Not supporting Interlace modes and a wrong Aspect Ratio would be a "No go" for me.
CRT or 5:4 all the way |

AFAIK, there's no 4:3 LCDisplay supporting true 49.92 Hz available on the market right now. 5:4 (1280 x 1024) is a no-go for me. I'd love one for sure (1600 x 1200). the best solution I could come up with is the ASUS PA248QV (1920 x 1200) in combination with a RetroTINK-4K.

5:4 is "perfect" for PAL imho. (I use a BenQ that supports 15khz)
Edit: added a few poorly photographed Pictures, showing that when the whole PAL Overscan is used the 5:4 fits perfect and the Aspect ratio is correct. Without Full Overscan you get small black bars on the sides and very small ones on top and bottom. But nothing is really perfect tho; because of the LCD, you get that "smearing effect" in motion. CRT would be way better in that aspect. Nothing beats motion on a CRT. Anyway, use whatever works for you. Last edited by Torti-the-Smurf; 28 June 2024 at 19:31. Reason: adding a few pictures :) |

The 1280x1024 5:4 screens while a bit "tall" compared to old monitors are great with the Amiga because a 320x256 image perfectly scales giving a potentially lovely picture on an RGB2HDMI/Indivision etc. You can lose a bit of image if max overscan is employed however (Sensible Soccer springs to mind).
I will mention the Dell P1917S again as you can get it new, it's a nice IPS panel with no noticeable lag, does 15Khz over VGA if you want (AGA machines don't look so good on this connection), does 50Hz and can be picked up ex-business for about 30 quid. |

Nothing beats a good scaler on an OLED these days if you want to use modern monitors/TVs. If you just want an Amiga work monitor it's fine to use one of the mentioned ones i guess. But with scrolling games involved not really.

OLED is nice, sure, but nothing beats CRT in motion.
It cant be done... Here is why [ Show youtube player ] Here is also a Video about that topic. [ Show youtube player ] Anyway, the important thing is that the picture satisfies |

OLED+BFI+HDR (for counter the dimming) is good enough for me in app 80-90% of all cases. The motion clarity is very good, except for some insanely fast scroller. With low latency boost mode on (which is enabled via VRR feature) the LG devices have nearly zero display lag (BFI though adds of course one extra frame of lag).

Yeah, for proper deinterlace you really need a good scaler. Motion adaptive deinterlacing works pretty good on modern scalers, especially on the Retrotink 4K.

Is there a review of the Dell P1917S with some retro sydtem or Amiga at various 15kHz modes? Would be interesting to see how it handled it. The detailed manual insists freq range is from 30 to 81kHz. Now its not unusual of course that the spec dont reveal the ”secret” 15kHz ability. https://dl.dell.com/manuals/all-prod...uide_sv-se.pdf Pages 15/16. |

Scandoublers via HDMI produce as good a picture as I have seen out of an Amiga on this monitor. |

I have been quite happy with the Dell SE2722H. Not sure about the UK, but they can still be had here. |

I gave up looking for 15kHz displays long ago. Too many compromises. Get a good scaler and then you have a much wider selection of monitors available.
CRTs have some smearing in motion as well, due to phosphor persistence. Do people not notice this? When it comes to 50Hz, I'd also rather use LCD. I still remember getting headaches from the C1084's flicker at this refresh rate. |

There's a list of 15kHz capable 'modern' monitors here --> http://15khz.wikidot.com/
With the A1200 I use a gbs-8200 (with firmware from gihub) connected to a HP LA1956x LCD (5:4) I bought half a dozen LA1956x displays (cheap, <AU$50 each) purely because they can do a v_refresh of 50Hz...it's not advertised via EDID, however they can do it... Horizontal frequency = 24 - 83 kHz Vertical refresh rate = 50 - 76 Hz Max dot_clock value = 170Mhz This is useful (especially wrt emulation), as you can obtain smooth horizontal scrolling using the VSync option, with Amiga titles that are aimed at PAL. (explaining how to get the 50Hz modes is totally OT here =) |
