Rainbow Islands - Difference in versions???

Heya guys,

Question about the Rainbow Islands releases...

SPS has the following listed:

Code:
1311 Rainbow Islands 1 OCS EU Budget: Hit Squad
0026 Rainbow Islands 1 OCS EU Retail: alt1 Ocean Software Ltd
0012 Rainbow Islands 1 OCS EU Retail Ocean Software Ltd
All of these have the "Taito / Graftgold / Ocean" initial title screen:

In TOSEC there are these files available:

Code:
Rainbow Islands (1990)(Ocean)[cr QTX].adf
Rainbow Islands (1990)(Ocean)[cr QTX][b doscopy].adf
Rainbow Islands (1990)(Ocean)[cr QTX][t +1 Vortex 42].adf
Rainbow Islands (1990)(Ocean)[cr QTX][t +2 Slipstream].adf
Rainbow Islands (1990)(Ocean)[cr SCX][t +11 Flashtro][b doscopy].adf
Rainbow Islands (1990)(Ocean)[cr SCX][t +3 SCX].adf
Rainbow Islands (1990)(Ocean)[cr SCX][t +3 SCX][b doscopy].adf
Rainbow Islands (1990)(Ocean)[cr SCX][t +6 Flashtro][b doscopy].adf
Rainbow Islands (1990)(Ocean)[cr SCX][t +7 Flashtro][b doscopy].adf
Rainbow Islands (1990)(Ocean)[cr SCX][t +8 Flashtro][b doscopy].adf
Rainbow Islands (1990)(Ocean)[cr TIC - Freestyle][h Bandidos][t +1 TIC - Freestyle].adf
Rainbow Islands (1990)(Ocean)[cr TIC - Freestyle][t +1 TIC - Freestyle].adf
Rainbow Islands (1990)(Ocean)[cr TIC - Freestyle][t +1 TIC - Freestyle][b doscopy].adf
Rainbow Islands (1990)(Ocean)[cr VF].adf
Rainbow Islands (1990)(Ocean)[cr VF][b diskdoctor].adf
Rainbow Islands (1990)(Ocean)[cr VF][b dump].adf
Rainbow Islands (1990)(Ocean)[cr VF][h ACU - Bandidos].adf
Rainbow Islands (1990)(Ocean)[cr VF][h TFS].adf
Only the "Quartex" cracks have the "Taito / Graftgold / Ocean" initial title screen...

All of the others above show "Rainbow Project" while loading:

Just wondering if there is any difference in the versions???

Interesting. It looks like the one I tried (and failed miserably) to make a copy of the original from Dastardly.

@dlfrsilver
I wonder if the stream files could be used to repair the original dump?

Agreed but I haven't had the chance to fully test this crack as yet... Does anyone know if this works all the way through without the graphics issues reported on EAB?

I know there's lot of bad cracks floating about, see these threads:
... http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=79076
... http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=21957

GameBase Amiga uses "Rainbow Islands (1990)(Ocean)[cr SCX][t +11 Flashtro][b doscopy].adf". This version has the "Rainbow Project" and not the nice "Taito / Graftgold / Ocean" initial title screen.

Also; original question still remains.

Besides the loading screens i.e. "Taito / Graftgold / Ocean" vs. "Rainbow Project"; are there any other differences between versions?

the dastardly version was a demo version. So it would need the exact same demo disk......

I'm not sure on differences. I have the original that I got as a freebie in the Flight Of Fantasy Pack many years ago. I just tried it on My A1200 via relokick and it has the proper loading screen as can be seen in my photos :

Maybe the ones with the "Project Rainbow" were almost-final versions that leaked to the crackers?

It wouldn't be the first time that in the race to be first the crackers end up releasing some preview version claiming it to be final

Yeah quite possibly

All the SPS releases show the "Taito / Graftgold / Ocean" initial title screen. Not one of them has the "Project Rainbow" so do wonder about this version...

Oh, another thing to note that I'm sure everyone already knows, is that the "Rainbow Project" version has protection in the form of manual code input (which all cracks have bypassed by pressing Enter):

Thanks Denis; then we should really be using the "Quartex" cracks.

Has anyone completed this all the way through without the graphics issues reported on EAB? Would be cool if Flashtro could add their trainer to this version

My version back at the time had the Rainbow Project screen, but it didn't show any manual code input screen. I don't remember who cracked it, but to be quite honest, I don't remember ever showing any crakctro (Though I can really be wrong on this, it has been too many years )

My copy doesn't (I still have it... somewhere) have manual protection either, but definitely had the "Project Rainbow" screen. Can't remember any cracktro... Might try dumping it and comparing it to TOSEC to see if it's a known image or not.

I am pretty sure I still have the disk back at my mother's place, but have no idea of its state. If anyone interested in taking a look at this, I can grab it and send it somewhere

I was with Gremlin when he cracked it.

It was cracked from a shop bought original copy and it had the "Rainbow Project" logo on loading

Isn't there a way to contact the original coders? That's the only way we'll know for sure what went on with the different title screens

I'm practically sure (but i wouldn't bet my balls on this) that i did read by the past somewhere that the beta "rainbow project" version has major differences with the final one in the last islands. I don't remember exactly what, maybe about the game difficulty or enemy positions. The quartex one seems to work flawlessly until the end on my A500, this is the one to use. Of course the "rainbow project" one (the one i had and finished at the time) is also an interesting disk to have in a collection !

Just checked my original I bought back then on an A3000 and it also only displays the Taito / Graftgold screen. The Rainbow Project pic was probably a placeholder during development.
