ScalaMM/Infochannel not working on AmigaOS3.2

Hi everyone....
There was a thread posted on Facebook earlier today where several people reported that ScalaMM or ScalaInfochannel would not launch on AmigaOS3.2.

I did some investigation myself and found out that this happens on my systems too.

When trying to launch the program, a requester will pop up saying "Can't open device scalamm.gfx".

Tried to run snoopdos on this issue, and it's able to find the scalamm.gfx-file fine.
Downgraded to OS3.1 just to see if this wasn't an issue with the Scala installation itself, but it's not. It works fine on OS3.1

So I tried to disable the upgraded libraries one by one according to the libraries that snoopdos reports the program was loading.
First I renamed intuition.library - no luck
Then I tried to rename graphics.library to something else. Cold boot the machine so it would to the romupdate without the upgraded library.

Scala now works fine again.
The version of graphics.library it's working with is v40.24.
The application will crash with the above message with graphics.library from OS3.2.

So my quetion is, has anyone successfully been able to run Scala on OS3.2?

EDIT:
I just tested it on 3.1.4, and it works fine there, so it's a OS3.2 issue only.

Confirmed error on file device scalamm.gfx

I think the problem lies in KickStart 3.2, if you use OS 3.2 with Kickstart 3.1 from Early Startup Control "no startup" ScalaMM works fine.

Yeah it works fine if you boot with no startup at COLD boot,yes (before loadmodule got a chance to do the romupdate).

Because even if the graphics.library for OS3.2 is present in the LIBS:-folder, "version graphics.library" will report v40.24 when checked before romupdate.

And yes, here is relevant info about the system I'm testing it on:

Amiga3000
Kickstart 3.1
OS3.2
Cyberstorm 060 MK-II with god know how much FastRAM...

This is not entirely the case I am experiencing, but I can reproduce the fail.

MM400 will fail to start if you have a 3.2 ROM system

MM400 will run if the system has 3.1 ROM + loadmodule kicked 3.2 rom modules
This works on a fully loaded WB/RTG system.

Investigating the cause...

Thanks Michael, if it's of interest I noticed that AfA OS doesn't work because of the Icon.lib.exe that loops.

Without the Icon.lib.exe OS 3.2 starts but AfA_Prefs has the voices "off" so you can not choose a skin, tried to copy a setting from another OS but it does not start, could the fix for ScalaMM reuse the one for AfA OS as well?

Do you have any idea !

No idea why AfA_icon should fail, unless it does havily patch the graphics library...
Maybe it will magicly work too.

As for the skin system, that probably fails because of the new intuition, which is a bit different to the original since it's compiled by a different compiler and some structures have changed. Just like VisualPrefs it will need a small update to function properly. That's just the nature of this patches that are very tightly integrated with the system.

Hopefully the update will come out soon, but given that Hyperion never gives advance notice of release dates and seems to sit on things for a while even when they're ready to release, who knows?

I'm waiting on this fix, myself.

AmigaOS3.2.1 update was just released. Just tested it, and Scala works again.
However there seem to be issues when I'm launching it from workbench (RTG on a Vampire600v2). It will guru.

Not sure if this is a vampire-issue. Will do some tests with my 1230IV to verify it.

Works fine launching it from the wb on my A1200 with Vampire RTG.

I got guru'd in WinUAE emulating 4000 with '040 and Cyberstorm Mk3 (UAE RTG) the first time running on 3.2.1 but now it actually runs. However it seems to try to use a 1280x720 screen on chipset resolution making it impossible to do anything.

I have a A4000T, Picasso IV, kickstartROM 3.2.1 (V47.102), P96 (V3.2.2).
When I first tried, starting up Scala gave a short black screen as if it was opening a native amiga screen, but then it went back to the WB screen.
Strange enough after a reboot I got a real Scala screen, telling me it needs the dongle, which is present and never failed to work.

So has this solution a problem recognising the dongle or might something else be wrong?

AMIGASYSTEM Registered User Join Date: Aug 2014 Location: Brindisi (Italy) Age: 70 Posts: 8,248	Confirmed error on file device scalamm.gfx I think the problem lies in KickStart 3.2, if you use OS 3.2 with Kickstart 3.1 from Early Startup Control "no startup" ScalaMM works fine. Because even if the graphics.library for OS3.2 is present in the LIBS:-folder, "version graphics.library" will report v40.24 when checked before romupdate. And yes, here is relevant info about the system I'm testing it on: Amiga3000 Kickstart 3.1 OS3.2 Cyberstorm 060 MK-II with god know how much FastRAM... MM400 will fail to start if you have a 3.2 ROM system MM400 will run if the system has 3.1 ROM + loadmodule kicked 3.2 rom modules This works on a fully loaded WB/RTG system. Investigating the cause...

Without the Icon.lib.exe OS 3.2 starts but AfA_Prefs has the voices "off" so you can not choose a skin, tried to copy a setting from another OS but it does not start, could the fix for ScalaMM reuse the one for AfA OS as well? Do you have any idea !

Maybe it will magicly work too. As for the skin system, that probably fails because of the new intuition, which is a bit different to the original since it's compiled by a different compiler and some structures have changed. Just like VisualPrefs it will need a small update to function properly. That's just the nature of this patches that are very tightly integrated with the system.

However there seem to be issues when I'm launching it from workbench (RTG on a Vampire600v2). It will guru. Not sure if this is a vampire-issue. Will do some tests with my 1230IV to verify it.

However it seems to try to use a 1280x720 screen on chipset resolution making it impossible to do anything.
