*ahem
neither is Gods ------ *aparently *teehehee* ------------- joking aside - why has no one mentioned alfred chicken - its a really fun game - much better than that robo-cod thingy... Fire and Brimstone: an interesting take on Ghost and a gobblins nor have I seen any mention of Flink, Land of Genesis, The Lion King, Super Cauldron, Total Recal to name some more - very good platformers. |

Well back in the day I enjoyed most platform games actually, including the Addams Family (which irritates the hell out of me now), Baby Jo (which is just boring to me now) and Zool (actually I still like that one, although the loading times are just insane).
Here's a question for you: what is it that makes a platform game more than good? My choices in order of importance: - lots of secrets to find - smooth and fast gameplay - colorful graphics - plenty of action (either weapons or the old jump on the head stuff) - cheery tunes For me if the game hits all of these qualities, its a platformer I can replay until the end of my days. On that note, I'm going to play Aladdin again soon |

Not as much as Cadaver anyway! I reckon that could have been the new Super Mario World with the right marketing Quote:
Accurate controls - No cheap deaths. If I die I want to feel it was MY fault, not the controls. Well balanced difficulty curve - It should start off nice and relaxed, and by the end be hard as nails. Depth - lots of secrets and bonuses to find and keep me coming back for more. Level design - Interesting and varied levels that make me want to explore them. On the Amiga, the game that ticks all these boxes for me is Rainbow Islands. Fantastic game. Super Mario World on the SNES is also brilliant. |

- interesting level design (including lots of hard-to-find/access areas),
- good graphics (not necessarily colorful) with distinctive style and interesting theme (for example I like the ancient motives in gods). I prefer "dark" over "cute". If there is cutesy then it is good when it has some darkness in it or a bit of madness (james pond), - I like it when there is a lot of items or vehicles to use, - adventure elements (actually I dont like "the real platformers" very much) . |

Top Amiga Platform Games
By today's standards the following are still great games: Turrican 2 Pang Myth Midnight Resistance Odyssey Putty Rainbow Islands Dizzy (don't make me choose now) Benefactor Bubba n Stix Have aged a bit but still good: Crazy Sue Zool New Zealand Story Robocod Killing Game Show Has aged badly: Gods (oh no, not another Gods basher! 'fraid so) Excellent theme tune aside, there is no getting away from the fact that this is and always was a pretty crap game. The rubbish main sprite animation (who walks like that?) isn't even the main problem here. The real problem is, this game doesn't play fair. The gameplay relies heavily on pulling levers in the correct order. Players are given no prior clue as to what that order might be so it's all pure guesswork combined with memory from prior plays. Nothing cerebral at all. No sense of justice when you get something wrong and pay a heavy price. Also, I remember magazines at the time touting that according to Bitmap Bros, Gods would feature advanced enemy AI. That turned out to be absolute hogwash and the game features the same dumbass enemy sprites walking set predetermined paths as any other game, albeit with so much energy some of them that you had to place a chair leg on the firebutton at certain points and go have a cup o tea until it was vanquished - YAWN! For my top 10 list.. in no particular order Arabian Nights The Addams Family Ruff 'n' Tumble Parasol Stars James Pond 2 Putty Turrican 3 Soccer Kid Rodland McDonald's Land I left Benefactor, Flashback, The Lost Vikings and Fury of The Furries out, as people would maybe call them puzzles or adventure games instead of platform games.. but IMO they are better than Turrican 3, Soccer Kid ,Rodland and McDonald's Land I never got why Arabian Nights gets no love. I think it's one of the best Platform games ever made, with spot-on level design, lots of secrets, good controls, a lot of variety in the gameplay, and no jump in the head of enemies And yeah, I am one of the 3 guys in the world who prefers Turrican 3 over Turrican 2. I find it to be a lot more polished, balanced and fun to play. Even though Platform games are a typical console genre, I think that, considering the flurry of games of this type every system got, the Amiga had the best ones at that period. I could keep listing pretty good games on this genre: James Pond 3, Globdule, Great Giana Sisters, Brim & Firestone, Flink, Leander, Assassin Special Edition, Lionheart, Lethal Weapon, Global Gladiatos, The Killing Game Show, Woody's World, Kid Chaos, Harlequin, Zool 2, Wolfchild, Chuck Rock 1 & 2, Premiere, Bubba 'n' Stix, The New Zealand Story, Trolls, The First Samurai, The Second Samurai, Flimbo's Quest, Flood, Hudson Hawk, Smidge, Fire & Ice .... And those are ones I find to be good (Not always excellent, but at least good ) There are some averagey ones that can be very enjoyable too. And I do like Jim Power. |
