A large component of it is you yourself. If you just leave it up to the kids, then everything is stupid and dumb.

I got Minecraft Dungeons for the Switch for my nephew. Of course the first time he died he threw the controller away and called the game stupid, the ego of a 6yo is quite fragile. Didn't have any chance to get him interested in trying again.

So my brother and me started to play it and because we were laughing our asses off, eventually the controller was pulled from our hands because the little bastard couldn't stand being left out of the fun.

Kids. You have to trick them into liking something.

Thing is, when we grew up we witnessed the evolution from pong to gradually better looking and more complex games all the way to something like Far Cry 6 on PS5.
But our kids were born into the age of ”photo-realistic” games so they dont really judge them by what they look like.
E.g. my son only cares if the game is fun to play. Plenty of modern indie games with the retro look so he cant really tell new games from old ones.
Ffom that perspective, a nice, fun Amiga game has every chance to get the same treatment as any modern ”indie-looking” game

Based on what I've managed to persuade people to play (and can remember off the top of my head)

Lemmings
Lotus III
Knights
Micro Machines
Bi-planes
Cannon Fodder
Sensible World Of Soccer
Simon The Sorcerer
Dizzy: Prince Of Yolkfolk
Heimdall II

All pretty accessible and easy to get into at least. I think maybe some platformer like Superfrog would be a good mention. Maybe Agony for the art and playability. Dynablaster and Extreme Violence are good multiplayer fun also.

FPS games from the 90s haven’t aged that well, also the thread is about Amiga games. Quake doesn’t really come to mind in this context, but just to be fair, Quake can look quite different on a modern day PC depending on which engine you run it on. The original 8-bit fixed palette software renderer running in low res is not a good look even for kids used to blocky Minecraft graphics ;-)
