Amiga IDE shows in WinUAE but I can't copy files!

Hi, again

I've given up on my CF problem at the minute, and am now encountering another.

I've hooked up one of my Amiga IDE hard drives to my laptop using a USB 2.5" IDE enclosure. WinUAE see's it fine, and the partitions i've made after formatting it in the 1200.

However, I can't copy anything onto the drives. It appears to be copying, but then nothing shows up, even when the amount of space used increases. The partitions show up in workbench fine. Doesn't show up in DOpus though.

Completely baffled with this one.

I've searched all around for ideas on what's wrong but I just come up with issues concerning WinUAE seeing the HD, but nothing of this nature.

Help!

Yeah I tried that but it still wasn't showing anything, but cheers for the suggestion anyway. Finally found a solution though.

Changed the tooltype to SCSI_DEVICE_NAME=uaehf.device for HDToolbox and prepped/partitioned the drive. (Found that in another thread here.)

Pulled the IDE drive, stuck it in the Amiga, and formatted both partitions.

Put the IDE BACK in the USB enclosure, fired up WinUAE and it read both partitions perfectly. Copied System.zip over (for ClassicWB - again it read it perfectly and copied over fine this time) then put the IDE back in the Amiga.

Booted up with the ClassicWB install disk, and now it's installing.

Long drawn out process but it appears to be working fine now.

Cheers

Cheers, but i'm having serious issues getting CF cards to run, so i'm attempting with two different IDE drives now. Previous post semi-worked; it installed, but wasn't bootable. Having another crack at it now...

Can't get it to format under WinUAE though (am using the format utility from WB3.1.) Can prep it using HDToolBox (after setting the device to a UAE HD) but no idea how to format it up.

Just followed the guide to the letter, formatted my 4gb drive, both partitions, with sfsformat as instructed, but as soon as I tried to copy system.zip over I got drive read error messages.

And the 1.4gb drive has ClassicWB installed, but keeps hanging...

No combination of CF Card / Adaptors or CF-IDE will work...

Just spent £160 on all this Amiga gear, and i'm on the verge of binning it after spending hours unsuccessfully trying to get ClassicWB and WHDLoad on it...

Any more ideas on what I can do to get a working A1200 / HD that doesn't hang every 6 seconds, would be very welcome

Yep set the maxtransfer exactly as shown in the pic, and yep, ok'd every change in HDToolBox too.

Didn't set the boot partition as 500mb though - is there a max size limit for the boot?

One CF card looks generic, but i've used it to put ClassicWB on a mates A1200... For some reason now it doesn't work on his Amiga either...

The other is a Kingston Elite Pro x50 2gb.

One HD is 4gb, the other is 1.4gb.

The Amiga also has 4mb trapdoor ram btw - KS 39.106.

It seems increasingly like everything I have to sort this thing out is knackered, bar the machine and the extra ram...

thats perfect

best to use this version on your setup
http://classicwb.abime.net/classicweb/full.htm

instead of using system zip copy your system over using dopus in winuae

see this http://www..com/view/?joa0rfev30q7sb7

DOpus still isn't seeing the IDE drive, and ClassicWB Full is the one i've been using (it seemed to be the one most compatible with my system specs.) I've set the boot partition to approx 500mb too, but with DOpus not reading it, i'm going to try copying System.zip over and running the disk through WinUAE.

Not optimistic though lol

No still not seeing it. There appear to be serious issues with the Amiga and/or the HD's i'm using, so i'm seriously considering buying another 1200 (one that's guaranteed to be working with CF's and IDE's) so to this end i'm starting to list some of my other retro stuff on eBay. Don't know what to do about this Amiga gear though, it's cost me a fortune and the only thing that works properly is the trapdoor ram!

Less than happy but really want a working A1200 HD setup!

another thing the 1200 might need a recap the capacitors are prone to leaking and damaging tracks on the mobo this will give you problems

could you post a close up pic of your mobo with cf adapter too use postimage.org for free

you could aways send your cf/hardrive to me to check and if needed i could set it up for you

That's a very kind offer, thanks, but even when I get anything set up it freezes in the 1200 - I've had ClassicWB installed 3 times, twice on the small HD, once on a CF, and each time the machine has frozen, so i'm unsure what good it would do.

PSU is fine yeah tested it on another Amiga. I'm going to look into picking up another HD or perhaps get a ready-made CF card from Amigakit. Spent hours doing this today, so i'm gonna have a break lol, list a bit of retro crud and look into ordering stuff from Amigakit... If that doesn't work i'll just give it up, taking up far too much time and money

Btw, thanks, your help has been very much appreciated!
