Dogfight II

does anybody remember the game, 'dogfight 2'? it was semi- public domain and came to us from a company called 'deja vu' for a pound or two. ive found other games called dogfight but they are not the same. it was a top down experience with 8 aircraft (we usually crammed the fingers of 3 people around the keyboard and had 5 computer players). these aircraft ranged from things like super planes to the more arcane 'stringbags' of world war 1, super heroes like superman and even handgliders. i particularly remember the handgliders because now and again a demolition derby level came up where if you touched another aircraft you would die, and for handgliders they all start touching each other which made it tricky to survive.
i cannot find this game but it was so much fun in multiplayer that im sure somebody here will remember it. maybe it had a different name. we still have the disk im sure but i wouldnt know how to convert it into an adf. the name also suggests there was a prequel version. we bought it in 1990/1991.
tommy.

Duuuuuuude!

I remember this game. Used to play it all the time on with my brother (and other friends)

Some of the 'aircraft' were circular spaceships which I recall were almost impossible to use because it was very unclear about which direction you were orientated!

I can't find any mention about the game on the internet other than yours!

I also must have the disk somewhere. I could, with some considerable effort now - convert it to an .ADF file.

But demand doesn't seem that high in general

Sorry I've replied 14 years later.

This sounds very interesting, but are you sure it was an Amiga game?
If you have it in a disk, by all means, please upload it!

Just seen this after the Deja Vu Licenseware thread.

Yes, it's definitely an Amiga game and it's superb. It's by Aaron and Adam Fothergill. I have a copy, however it annoyingly crashes after the menu screen. I can upload it to the Zone if anyone wants to try and salvage it?

Here's a photo I posted a few years ago (triumphantly, before finding out the bloody thing didn't work properly)

Hmmm, seems to crash after Level 3

...happens with the disk version I made and also when testing with the original files in ClassicWB 3.1 Lite.

Used SnoopDos and nothing missing; may need an expert to work out why.

Maybe the game is only 3 levels and that's it?

...there's nothing in the settings to select the "number of levels" to be played.

I really don't know, never played this before in my life... anyone who had the original / purchased version previously i.e. back in the day, want to comment?

No, there's definitely lots of levels as I used to play it 2-player a lot with my mate. The number of planes builds up until all 8 are on the screen at once and I think it gets harder in other ways - faster planes, more planes with flamethrowers, etc. Was there an air-strike level? That one could be a false memory, but I can check with my mate. It was such a fun little multiplayer game.

I was playing around again today and testing; once the game went onto Level 5 before crashing / returning to the CLI...

I think the program is a bit buggy; maybe one of the talented coders on EAB can take a look and possibly fix?

Hmmm, I think this is crashing due to files missing from the archive you uploaded clebin

From the screenshot below, on the left you can see the filenames listed in "disklist.dat", and on the right the files that are actually in the archive:

These are the missing files:

Code:
Normal Aircraft
Superplanes
Stringbags
Star-wars
Silly !
doggy5.abk
Selector5.abk
Display5.abk
Hang Gliders
Doggy6.abk
Selector6.abk
Display6.abk

Thanks for checking all this DamienD. I should've spotted the missing files. That's all I was able to get from my old GVP HD.

It would be interesting to try filling in the missing numbered abk files (doggy, selector and display) with copies of earlier numbers in the sequence. I can't check till I'm home, but they might just be colour variations so would be a small loss but allow the game to run.

The non .abk files I'm guessing are alternative plane-sets. In which case, they're entirely optional. If you look at my menu screenshot, I suspect that the icon on the middle right ([disk] -> [plane]) is used to load them if you want to play with hand-gliders for instance..

Possibly, maybe, my friend can find the full copy on disk but he's a teacher with 3 young kids and a house to renovate so, well, you get the idea...

Great minds think alike

...already tried that but still fails

Maybe to do with the non .abk files still missing or something.

Any update clebin; it is school holidays at the moment?

...seems this game is really rare considering the thread / requests dates back to 2004 etc.

Hopefully your friend can help us all with providing the full release / files as it needs to be preserved for the good of the Amiga community
