RTG on 68000?
Hi!
I would like use RTG on the Amiga2000 (4 MB fast ram) with Piccolo card. Picasso96 and Cybergraphix not works, because needs minimum 68020 pocessor. I think the older EGS works on 68K, but I can't install it. I'm trying with the lha (disc ?) files (ver7.1) from the aminet, but not succeed. I get 8000 0003 error message (ramlib) Can write somebody how to install that? Maybe you have another idea without expanding the machine? That means illegal address error. Usually means the code was written to use 32-bit RAM which you don't have.
Give a more detailed description of the installation process and the error msgs. You might be able to ask the Picasso team to make you an experimental P96 build for 68000? They are actively developing their software. They might consider it because they also sell the ACA500 which is only 68000 (but can be overclocked to 48MHz). It might be too much work for them though. You would have to purchase a license also. Going forward there are a few cheap accelerators for A2000 (i.e. sub £100) Last edited by alexh; 05 September 2022 at 15:53. |

Thanx for reply!
I dont want another CPU, because this machine used for old (OCS) whdload games, and with an speeder CPU some games will run too quick. Bigger resolution, and more colors used for browsing (igame), etc |

Understood but realistically this isn't going to happen unless you write your own. OR re-source and hack out the 68020+ code from within.
Provide a detailed debug log of installing EGS (where you get the files from, unpacking, installing, running, error msg) and maybe we can understand what is going wrong. |

Frankly, you won't get happy with such a slow processor and so little RAM. Remember, you will need the same amount of RAM as framebuffer anyhow, and you need the CPU to perform some rendering jobs the graphics card cannot do, and you need all the EGS replacement libraries in RAM, so you won't be with much RAM left. Consider buying a budget Turbo board for your machine (for example Matze's "Olga") and you'll be much happier with the end result. The piccolo is a fine card otherwise, but without more RAM and more CPU power, it is a bit pointless. |

I have an old 030/40 card in mine and everything I tried works and at the right speed!
Maybe a Terrible Fire 030/50 card is a good choice for you, 64MB ram and speedy screens/windows... Chris |

TF356 doesn't implement taking over the 680x0 bus handshake/protocol. So even in the CPU slot you have to remove the 68000 from the motherboard for it to work. i.e. no fall back to standard speed. Not a good option for a compatibility Amiga.

Doesn't help with Piccolo - Picasso II works with 68000 using the old Village Tronic Picasso driver.

Yes, the early versions of P96 (‚Picasso‘ back then) were for 68k.
Not sure where to find them. |

Picasso and Picasso96 are two completely different systems that are not related. The only thing that is left is that P96 still provides emulation for the old villagetronic library (by means of the emulation.library).

Maybe a kickstart switcher…if you boot TF536 in 3.1 you get full speed and fast RAM, but boot it in 1.3 and it will run in a special 7Mhz mode with no fast ram.

Most 2D Amiga games are frame locked so won’t run quicker on faster CPU’s. It’s the 3D games that will, but generally this is wanted as they are smoother. WHDLOAD tends to correct for any speed issues.

Ok! and Thanks!
The Picasso II solution works!! - but crashes (8100 0005) all of the newer versions os workbenc.library. Works good with only wb3.1. It's good to me, but with this version I can't remove the icon borders. Any ideas? |

trying to make RTG to work in a 68000 is like trying to enter to internet in a 68000 > impossible or very hard or unusable
because all RTG stuff and all the internet related stuff was designed for a 68020+ a cheap 030 accel for the A2000 will make a big difference and will not destroy the compatibility in games or anything like that |

Barbarian (Palace) too fast on 68020, R-type II sometimes slow on 68020, etc...
