That's interesting.

For my collection I changed from the TFX.OLD --> TFX.FPU on my .HDF.

I didn't play long enough to see if the "cannon no longer damages anything".

Given what you've said, maybe I should switch back...

This one James uploaded and I have it named as "TFX_68040_2001Version.lha": http://eab.abime.net/showpost.php?p=...6&postcount=44

I'm yet to try it though.

jotd; I've done a bit more investigation of all TFX game EXEs for the hard drive I created in my collection.

See these posts:

... http://eab.abime.net/showpost.php?p=...postcount=3326
... http://eab.abime.net/showpost.php?p=...postcount=3325

I've now put a new file in The Zone! with the only working game EXEs

I got TFX running respectably on a 1200 with Blizzard 030 50Mhz with FPU back in the day. Will check the Zone copies out and see what kind of performance I can get on my systems.

If someone eventually does a WHDLOAD for this mess it will be the best WHDLOAD ever!

It's been so long now that I can't even remember which idiot asked if this could be fixed up all those years ago...

good news, I have found self-modifying code in one of the executables (named "TFX")

self-modifying-code is often used in 3D games to speed up computations (changing AND by OR...) I understand for a A500/68000 game (CAPS, Red Zone) but WTF in a 68020+ game!!

I fixed the SMC with a cache flush and the fonts don't appear trashed anymore. I didn't experience any access faults, but I need to test more.

Several executables look completely bogus too. One works and it seems to use 020 or 040 instructions, dunno.

Anyway, as soon as I'm confident about a version I'll post a beta slave here for everyoneAngus to test

Well spotted. A HD install for TFX would be fantastic for the community.
And thank you for all the great work you do.

okay, this is a very early attempt

- only one version of executable is supported (name: TFX, size: 554340 bytes, 68020/68030 probably no fpu)
- still some glitches in fonts on "outside plane" view
- skip intro also skips some items in the main menu, will fix that later atm it allows to skip annoying intro to perform quick tests

if someone can share a manual or at least the set of keys, and advise which ones should be redirected to CD32 joypad buttons ...

EDIT: deleted beta slave, see the end of the post for a more recent package

Some quick answers to common questions..
change targets with the c key
hit z to use the laser bomb sites
'040 version is a little buggy, seems to only work on stock A4000s. Use
the FPU version. Processor settings in MCP or use of Oxypatcher make
the FPU code go a lot faster on '040 and '060s.

Press ALT L to put the plane into auto landing mode. Now go and practice doing
it yourself!

Hello everybody,

as getting the TFX-issue of CU Amiga was quite a *big* problem for me,
and I do not want to buy the November issue of TFX as well, I suggest
we exchange some information on the keys supported by TFX.

L - does NOT activate instrument landing, it only repeats the last
message

' - Instrument Landing System

DEL - Toggle mid-air refuel mode
(mid-air refueling is quite easy in TFX, just make sure you approach
the refueller straight from behind and within a reasonable range of
its speed)

alt W - Wind/weather report
(pointless, really, as the wind never stayed on, no matter how often I
toggled it)

the reference in CU Amiga that says '9' and '3' can be used to look
up/down within the cockpit should read 'Numeric Keypad 9' and 'Numeric
Keypad 3'

A - Autopilot
in all autopilot modes, speed can be adjusted in steps of 10 in the
same way engine RPM is controlled

7 - set autopilot to waypoint mode

8 - set autopilot to bearing mode - the plane will keep the preset
bearing and speed, bearing can be adjusted using the cursor left/right
keys

9 - set autopilot to tracking mode - your plane will follow the
currently active air target

\ - switch to targettting camera for the Laser-Guided-Bombs
(you still need to press 'Z' to lock onto a target)

Numeric * - increase after burner stage (RPM will be turned to
maximum, too)

Numeric / - switch off afterburner

left-ALT J - Jettison all air-to-ground weaponry

left-ALT + cursors left/right - rudder control
(changes plane heading without banking, this is only effective at
speeds below 300 knots, great for correcting your runway approach)

Jean-Francois :-)

(This is with Amiga 1200 and Blizzard 1260 BTW) I just had a quick test. It seemed very stable and quite smooth. Being me, I put the TFX files in a "data" drawer and used an icon to launch it. It wanted preload! :-) I didn't use any other parameters. It always impresses me how slick the games intro screens are.

I managed to bring down a MiG with a medium range missile, then I went to take a look at downtown Baghdad before getting shot down. Aside from trying to remember how to play the game, I didn't notice any WHDLoad related problems. Looking good!

I don't think I could access the options screen to experiment with draw distance, detail etc, but that may be me being inept.

Great work, sir!

Thanks! Took a lot of effort to do all the research and testing configs and all that. I was pretty pleased with it.

TFX.??? filesize: 599152 - runs
This last one, is one that I archived myself, years ago. I can't say much about it other than it works, and it's a different filesize to the others. I'm sure I kept it because it was the latest working exe I knew of at the time.

So if any of you have other exes, or info, or recollections? :-)
I've tried this 'new' executable but unfortunately am having trouble getting this to work under WinUAE. What machine did you get it to run on? Seems it requires an FPU so I added that but all I get is the intro music and a black screen??

that's the whole point of creating a whdload slave: to make it work whatever the configuration. The exe with size 599152 isn't supported yet but it will.

I have these game exes in the "TFX.hdf" in my collection.

All work fine, you can see the following file there

I'm using a 68040 + FPU + JIT config.
