Right this is done with now.. If anyone doesn't like the EAB then please leave. There are no hard feelings

FTP will be reopened when it has been checked and validated.

Thread closed until then.

For the past few days; myself, BippyM and Ian have been manually going through the "EAB FTP Server", folder by folder and checking stuff.

As you can imagine; there is a shitload of data, it's an extremely boring / tedious task, you really need to concentrate, and it's not much fun at all...

Anyway, virtually most of today I've been going through the ~Uploads folders...

I'm very happy to say that 99% so far are good; 159 of them are now certified clean

We still have a lot of other folders to check besides the ~Uploads ones though.

The following however, contain way too much data for me to go through by myself... therefore, anyone on the list below, please start going through your own folder:

It's your responsibility... and if you can't be bothered, then please let me know and I'll more than happily just delete.

Thank you.

Just to give you guys an idea of the magnitude this checking / cleaning will take...

In one member's ~Uploads folder there are many collections; 85 CDs worth to be exact.

Luckily there are .TXT listings but; it's taken me roughly 15 minutes to go through one large .TXT file.

So:
  • 15 x 85 = 1275 minutes
  • 1275 / 60 = 21 hours 15 minutes

FTP Is back online.

Biggest change is you can now only see your own FTP server. Anything you upload will be checked, and then if suitable will be moved to the main part of the FTP for others to enjoy

Please accept our sincere apologies for the down time

Yes they will, but the only people that that can see your uploads folder is yourself and the moderators. The generic ftp account will not be able to access your uploads folder.

I would be quite interested to know why you would need to use the generic ftp account to access your own uploads anyway.

Some were culled yes, I happen to have loads of them stored on my hard drive at the moment, your upload folder is there.

As no one else can access your uploads folder now other than you and the moderators, it might be as well to just put them all back as they were. We will need to discuss this though.

The personal space is a temporary holding area until what is in it has been verified as good, that way if there are any issues, they know precisely who to contact.

FWIW I prefer having my folder available to others. I delete and replace files as they are updated. For example when I am able to clean up a pdf. Having them moved to a place that I can't edit them would not be convenient. I have gone to considerable trouble to organize them pretty granularly.

I don't think my files have ever been an issue. As a member who has made a couple large donations, I'd like to request that my folder remain as it is and available to all.

Yes. It just takes a very long time to sync all this data to it as its an idiot and does not understand to move files. If a file is moved, the old one is removed and the new one is copied over. It is limited to about 170GB/day so it'll take a few days.

Might be a new link to it when done but I'll let you know.

Technically, I can select which upload folders are open and which are closed to the public, but I think that showing only a few upload folders will only cause confusion for users. The decision to do so is not mine though as I only host this thing =)
But in general, your upload folder was never meant as your personal sharing space. It was meant for someone to move the stuff into their "real" locations but there was not enough staff to do that as we don't really have someone 100% dedicated to the contents of the FTP. A solution that you want is possible as well though, as it is for Retroplay who have 100% full access to his own whdload folder and takes care if it himself. So perhaps a better idea would be to give you access to a folder outside of the ~Uploads to host things in.

Not understanding the upload folders not being available to anyone, so what was the point in going through all the files and deleting numerous files, why not just stop access to the upload folders in the first place if this is the end result!?

So sad! Alone when I think about how many hours I spent uploading everything so that everyone had access to my originals. And I had NOT uploaded Workbench or APC & TCP stuff!

I think the best solution here is to have an accessible area for each member. Like duplicate upload. That way when files have been verified they are moved to the required user folder and made available to all!

Obviously you have to update first post too:

"FTP SERVER IS CURRENTLY CLOSED FOR MAINTENENCE AND INTEGRITY CHECKS ON ALL CONTENT. WE WILL GET IT BACK OPENED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. WE ARE LOOKING AT POSSIBLY JULY 2020"

Would be interesting if you now have found a way to automatically check for illegal content or have you still check by hand?
