Cool My 68EC060 has an FPU! Will it have a MMU too?

I just got an Apollo 1260 off eBay, and I was disappointed when I noticed the processor had "XC68EC060RC50" stamped on it.

But look at the attached picture (shows the CPU, sysspeed info, and CPU060 and CPU info). The CPU060 info suggests I have a full 68060MC. Is this normal?

Plus, for the last 10 minutes I've been listening to full quality MP3's using Delitracker and the 060FPU version of MPEGa.library.

So, it seems beyond doubt that I have an FPU, but does this mean I have a MMU too? How do I check?

Steve.

All 060's have an MMU and an FPU, it's just a matter of whether they were disabled as a result of failing the testing process.

68060 has ID register that shows the type of CPU (PCR) which also includes FPU-disabled bit.

PCR=0430xxxx = 68060
PCR=0431xxxx = 68EC060 or 68LC060

Your 68060 appears to be full 68060. (also FPU-disabled bit is not set in your screenshot)

if you had MMU it would show up on the end of the CPU line
i would have thought that 060`s had this ?

see if it shows the MMU.using showconfig in your tools drawer
it will be at the top, ie processor CPU 68060/68060fpu/68060mmu

Thanks for the replies guys!

showconfig says: PROCESSOR: CPU 68060/68060FPU/68060MMU.
So I guess that settles it!?

Steve.

Try it with some program who needs the MMU, like running OS3.9...

When does OS3.9 require MMU? (You do know UAE does not have MMU emulation and OS3.9 works just fine..)

Hmm...

Then try to use this CLI line:

CPU FastROM - it activates the MMU if running WB3.1 or less.

I have a CyberstormPPC with an EC060 on it too. Next time I have it running I'll check that out to see if MMU is present by running Enforcer

I have an Apollo 1260 50MHz and when I put the command "CPU FastROM" in my WB3.9 CLI appears a line that says: 68060 68882 (INST: Cash Burst) (DATA: Cash CopyBack)
This means what?.. does it means that I have MMU?

When talking about 060s, doesn't EC mean "FPU not rated to work" and it's LC that means "neither FPU nor MMU rated to work" ?

It means the system thinks you have 060 + FPU. Doesn't say anything about MMU (or the lack of one). Also shows that your caches are on.

I always thought EC was "no MMU" and LC was "no MMU, no FPU".

acording to the motorolla specs the EC or EConomic are used to denote chips that dont have a functioning FPU OR MMU, where as LC or Low Cost means that they dont have an FPU but do have an MMU, most LC based chips have a higher frequency (66mhz+) which leads to the FPU having a high failure rate at that specific micron of manufacture.

As we all know motorolla's supply and demand (or lack of) ment that batches of batches of FULL FPU and MMU equiped chips were sold as EC and LC to meet up with demand.

I have two EC's that have full MMU and FPU cores and one of them clocks to 66mhz I also have a 75mhz LC as well, that has the FPU check bit removed, it may well be a mask without the FPU i would need to check the revision number

Congrats on a Full Core 060!!! Steve

68060 manual says: EC no MMU AND no FPU

this is probably the case here because the manual says full 68060 has $0430 in the upper word of the PCR and lc/ec has $0431, and this doesn't match here

what do you mean with FPU check bit, bit #16 of the PCR?
bit #1 is to enable or disable the FPU via software.

I'm faced with a 68060 dilemma myself. My 1260 has a XC68EC060RC60 with the 01F43G mask and I've been dragging my heels on buying an MC68060RC50 with the 71E41J mask and getting it upgraded. Today I was offered another 1260 with a XC68EC060RC50 and the seller is telling me that his has the MMU and FPU. Who knows, maybe mine does too? I suppose I should check that somehow. I keep hearing alexh in my head telling that the 71E41J mask runs cooler and is less buggy so I don't know what to do.

Bonus question: Do the last two digits indicate speed? My '60' has a 66MHz crystal so I can't help but wonder.

Indeed.

I'd suggest testing AMIX (Amiga Unix).
Unlike MINIX, this one *does* require a fully working MMU - it is mandatory, thus it's unable to run on (Win)UAE.

It's funny you should mention that because this came up on eBay the other day and it got me to wondering about the possibility of installing AMIX on a 1200. From what I gather from The Very Unofficial Commodore Amiga Unix (AMIX) Wiki, it isn't possible. Certainly would be cool though. For some reason it holds more appeal than trying Linux/m68k or NetBSD. I guess my SVR4 roots are showing.

AMIX most likely only works with 68030. (68030 MMU != 68040 MMU != 68060 MMU)
