CD32 - just how good is the CD player?

Just how 'good' is the CD player in the CD32? Did Commodore use a particular brand or just any cheap crap?

Just wanted to know.

Well, it's a 2x and it won't play CD-RW, but it plays CD-R. When using OS3.9, it takes a little while for it to detect a cd, but it may just be the way I have it setup (OS3.9 is not very friendly with the CD32 cd-rom).

Taken from the cd32 faq:

Quote:
Multi-session, double speed, top loading, caddy-less design. Max transfer about 330K/s. Custom controller based (not IDE or SCSI).

I've seen replacement cd units floating around Ebay before, but as far as I know, it can't be replaced with a different brand/model.

No I was wondering if a new drive could be used because 2x drives are old and will die eventually.

The only way to use a different cd drive is to get one of the expansions and hook on an external drive, if you can find one that fits the correct plug.

I looked into this (a little bit anyway...) a few years ago. I want to make a front-loading (slot-loading?) CD32
But looks like the only way is to buy a SX32 & hook up an IDE CDROM

The big problem with using an IDE cd-rom on the cd-32 is that it won't be able to boot cd32 games. You might be able to write a bootscript, but I don't think you can get it to boot cds by default.
