Exclamation amiga open-heart surgery

hi y'all,

today I recieved in the mail a shiny new 1.6GB 2.5" IDE hard drive. Immediately I opened up my 2nd hand A1200, blew off the dust, cobwebs and bits of cocaine powder and saw....

a BIG, UGLY 260Mb 3.5" IDE hard drive that was wrapped in cardboard and could barely fit in the case :eek

anyway I took that sucker out and put him in a safe place and set to work putting in my new hard drive when several things came to my attention:

1. there was no cradle to put the new hard drive in. I'm not too keen on wrapping my new HD in cardboard and letting it rattle around inside so it looks like another trip to amigadeals is in order.

2. the previous HD was sucking power via a Y-adapter hooked up to the floppy power supply. Now how do I get power to my new HD?

3. I really have no idea what the hell I am doing so I had better post on EAB and wait for some advice before I do something stupid

Your drive is powered from the 2.5" ide cable. No need to power it seperately.

Burseg is correct the 2.5inch hd has 44 pins (an extra 4 pins) for the power

Someone just bought a cradle etc.. not realising he already had one in his 1200 (I think it might be Steve) maybe he'll sell/give you this spare..

w00t, so all I need is that drive cradle and I'm good to go (the HD came with a 2.5" IDE ribbon already attached)

*hugs Burseg*

Well of course coffee is better, but who could turn either down?

Getting a bit back on topic..
That cardboard thing was dangerous... You could have catched a fire in there

My slim 3.5" Seagate was installed with an antistatic bag around it... major heatseeker, that bastard. So I took that crap off and put some plastic cushions below the HD (like the ones your Amiga has below), and presto, everything is OK now.

I am looking forward to change it for a 2.5" 3GB Western Digital, though.

yeah, they are. My new 1.6Gb HD with IDE ribbon arrived in a couple of days, excellent condition...Just the bare minimum though; no proper box or instructions and the packaging was bloody difficult to get open though (miles of padding and masking tape but very secure)

The HD cradle from Steve I'm still waiting for but hopefully it should arrive today
