Amiga Reading...of paper books!

Recently a 1200 I bought came with a little book. "The Amiga Format Bumper Book of Amiga Hints and Tips". I can't tell you how much I enjoy leafing through it.

Any good retro Amiga books on actual paper that you've come across? Obviously old magazines are fun too - perhaps a best issue of a particular magazine that you really enjoy?

I actually have been loving reading the manuals that came with the A500 and A1200. I see things and understand the system so much better now than I did as a 19 year old.

Yeah those white manuals with rings on the left of them. They had that classic book smell to them, if only they could bottle that.

I remember digging up an old Amiga 1000 manual in the school archives which I was allowed to bring home, it was like a treasure.

I’m reading through Deluxe Paint V manual! I bought it used from eBay from a library. Unfortunately I think it’s just a print out of a PDF.

My next read is going to be the Brilliance manual. Never used that package and super keen to get into it.

I just pulled out one of few Amiga World magazines I kept.

April 1994 Issue.

Amiga...PC...MAC...Which Platform Is The Best Buy?

Conclusion: To do what you can do on a nice Amiga it will cost you
PC (based on Dell Dimensions XPS) $6304
MAC (based on Quadra 800) $6112
Amiga (based on A4000) $3615

OK...enough reading...onto the back pages to shop for some hardware!

CSA 50Mhz 68030 for A1200 for only$559.95? I'll have to go with M1230XZ 50Mhz - it's only $379.99

What's that GrapeVine Group Inc? $149.99 for CDTV? $49.95 for A3000 keyboards? 29.50 for A1200 keyboards? $54.50 for A1000 keyboards? I'll take you entire inventory please!

I'm guessing you're skipping to page 38 for the "AGA Fixes" article - about how to get some more graphic capability in your non-AGA Amiga?

No, just marvelling at the novelty of an Amiga mag saying that you should buy an Amiga

And their cute way of pricing stuff, where you pick the most expensive model on the market for comparison. For real world prices, you can check any PC mag from that time (if you could stretch a hundred or two you'd get a ready made Pentium for that A4000 price, nevermind part-picking custom builds).

If you look, the bulk of the savings and value argument is in the software prices.
PC cost is $2799, Mac $3200, A4000 $2300. $99 for SoundBlaster and $125 for DSS8+ both to allow audio input. The rest is software costs, and the low cost of Amiga software put it way ahead in value argued.
